Who do you know of that's an unsung hero? I'm talking major stuff here, i.e. has helped a lot of people or has helped humankind progress greatly.

One of mine would be James Harrison. He's a blood donor that's saved two million children with his blood, as his blood containes a rare antibody that prevents infants who receive his blood from dying of Rhesus disease.

Yes, he is just blessed with that special blood of his, but he could have sold it for huge sums of money - instead, he donates it!

This is the kind of stuff that makes me want to be a better person.

Jonas Salk. Not exactly a household name.

    Developed the vaccine against Polio.
Regarding the patent to the vaccine which would have made him uber-wealthy, Salk replied: "There is no patent. Could you patent the sun?"

    Legend.

    another, John Houbolt.

How do you land on the moon? Proposed the concept of Lunar Orbit Rendezvous as the mission mode for the Apollo flights.

Became something of a pariah in engineering circles due to this dangerous idea. Rendezvous in earth orbit was deemed too dangerous in the early 60's.
Without his advocacy of LOR the US would not have landed on the moon before the end of 1969.

The greatest unsung hero I know is my hero, Michael Scofield.

He noticed a great injustice when his brother went to prison so he used his skills as a prison designer to go into the prison and break his brother out but his mother turned them in and at the end of it he died of an electric fence.

For always, I will remember this man.
