I have Mac Air and have installed MS Word on it. Trying to save my dissertation to pdf and I am getting a message saying "A section of footer 1 is outside of the printable area. Do you wish to proceed?" . This message then goes to "section 2" and that is it.
When I try print the document off only some of the half of each page number is coming out. This is a really important document and need it properly saved and to be printable. Anyone any suggestions? Greatly appreciated!

Check your page sizes, they should be A4.

I am only familiar with the Windows versions of Word. I am assuming the Mac version is similar.

You will need to go into page setup and reduce the size of the bottom margin so that the printer can print all the footer area.

I tried doing the reduction of the footer and reduced the footer to 3cm from the bottom. However, this is not working either and I am having a stroke at the thoughts of it.

Did you compare the document page size and PDF page size?

Go to Format -> Document -> Margins:

The settings for a dissertation should be:

    Top: 2.0 cm
    Bottom: 2.0 cm
    Left: 0 cm
    Right: 2.0 cm
    Gutter: 3.5 cm

    Header 1.25cm
    Footer 1.25 cm

That's what I had and it came out perfectly, make sure you PDF it before printing.

Don't worry if it gives an error when closing the settings box saying one of the settings is outside the printable area - that's just the left margin setting.

We were given settings by our university, have you been?
