It could be a few things. I think what has happened that a component has caused limp mode. Its where the engine purposely loses power and turbo to make sure nothing is damaged.

From what I read here it could be down to some sensors going or a split in the air hoses.

You will need to get it scanned first. The light is on so there will be a fault code set.Down on power is probably because it is gone into limp mode. It may well be turbo related, but too many other possibilities as well.

Turbo went on mine 2 weeks ago, fins shattered and blew oil back into the cylinders. Had to take the head off and get the valves reseated. Total parts came to 1500 without labour.

Did it just go suddenly or was the engine management light on aswell before hand??

OP, firstly, don't go jumping to conclusions based on the unfortunate experiences of others. Get the car scanned and see what fault code(s) come back, and take it from there.

I had a look at a Focus last week which misbehaved the same way as your Golf has. Its owner was worried sick that the car was horribly ill following all sorts of dire pronouncements from the bar stool mechanics he works with.

I scanned it and had it motoring right in 15 minutes. The airflow meter was covered in oil and cleaning it got the car motoring. The car does need to go to Ford for a software update to fix the underlying oiling up of the maf, but it's still a lot less than the wrecked turbo / blown computer / fuel pump / injectors / head gasket that the other sages spoke of.

Went suddenly, when we took the turbo off it looked like the nut holding the fins had come undone,, turbo hadnt been whistleing up to that point. When it stopped I got it back to the garage and checked electrical faults and all showed up ok. Took the turbo off and seen the fins all damages. When we tested the compression and it was not holding,it was only then we had to take the head off.

As shamwari says dont go on everyone elses experience, plug it in and see what electriacl faults come up and take it from there, just letting ya know the worst case senario that happened to me.
