Help Finding A Martial Art

    Hello all,

First time to post in the M.A. threads. I have done Taekwondo (AIMAA) for many years, I got to my Brown Belt. I had to stop though. The club I was in changed and did not do just Taekwondo, It started to move to Grappling instead. That was great because I learned the basics of how to fight without much space. Then I injured my foot badly, They changed to a different location and it was too far and then I had my Junior Cert exams. I'm 16 now and would like to start a MA again. I would be interested in something that is good for self defense on the street. Something that you can use if for instancce you were cornered and had not much space as well as if you had some distance. Any help would be greatly appreciaterd. I'm on Dublin Northdside, so something that had a class on the northside would be ideal.

    Hope you can help,

    Ciarán.

If you think you might be interested in MMA, and North city centre is handy to you, Kokoro MMA is located only 5 - 10 min walk from Connolly station.

    See www.mmaireland.com for more details.

Where on the northside are you?.

Off the top of my head you have..

BJJ Revolution/ Team Ryano at Andy Ryan's place in Baldoyal.. Highly recommended if you can get there.

Over in the Finglas direction is Barry Oglesby's Informed Performance gym. They've a great reputation too.

One of the Mod's here, Yomchi has a TKD class in Cabra and teaches a self defence class on Saturdays. Sorry I don't have his clubs web address.

If Judo is your thing, then you have Judo in Coolmine community centre (and Luke also teaches a BJJ class there on Fridays). Or Portmarnock Judo, in Portmarnock on Monday & Tuesday.

Or as Dave mentioned - Kokoro MA.

MeaveD (look her up here) run's a really nice gym out in Clonsaugh Ind. Est in Coolock - kickboxing, BJJ, Aikido, self defence etc..

And there's a few more in the stickie thread at the top of the page.

    Thank for that Dave.

I was looking at Aikido. That seems interesting. Do you know if it really effective to a real life situation? Something simmilar maybe. In the videos I have seen, the 'Attacker' is falling properly. I've never really like MMA. I don't know what it is about it. It just dosn't appeal to me. It's gonna sound strange, but MMA seems too rough. Thanks though.

I'm between Artane and Fairview. Thanks for them.

Wow, Barry was who I did Taekwondo with.

A self defense class with Yomchi sounds interesting. Thanks for the above links, I will look at them all. I appreciate it greatly!

I don't know enough about Aikido to comment on it's effectiveness in a real situation.

MMA is essentially combining striking and wrestling into a single system. Very often the coaches come from a different background, such as TKD, Karate, Boxing, Judo etc. I'd recommend trying it out first before finally deciding if it's something you'd enjoy training in.

Well if your looking for something a little less hectic than MMA or full on balls to the wall Judo then you have The Daigokan Judo Club in Donnycarney community centre.

Its one of the Judo clubs I train in. Its 'soft' Judo, mostly technical and very suited to a beginner who's shying away from the rough & tumble of some styles - including Judo in Portmarnock & Coolmine, where the members are mostly competitive Judoka and the learning curve can be pretty steep for the beginner.

Reading between the lines this is a club I'd recommend for you, and its right in your area.

    I'll definatly check that out.

Another question (Sorrry). I've come acorss this. http://www.wildgeesema.com/selfdefencecourse.html It is only for ten weeks. Something like this would be perfect but I want something that is a regular class. Is such a class avalible?

    EDIT; Maybe Kempo?

I'm posting so much, sorry. I've come across this. It's in the Wild Geese club. It is Kempo Cubano.

"Wild Geese cheif instructor Paul Cox has sucsessfully blended the arts of Kenpo and Eskrima to form a simple, concept based self defence ststem incorporating defence against weapons, knife disarming, control & restraint as well as unarmed self defence. "One weapon is all weapons" Why limit yourself to techniques when the basic concepts allow you to create your own."

    Has anybody here tried it?

tbh a ten week course for self defence is about the right length, self defence does not equal martial arts. Try the self defence course and have a look at the other class maybe. I've not trained kenpo with Paul Cox but I've managed to take some of his eskrima classes and I found him to be an excellent instructor

Hey Ciaran. First thing, I can't believe you're 16, time flies. Secondly we have a new gym on Ballyboggan Road now. Hopefully it's not too far away from you to get to. Check it out www.informedperformance.com

We have BJJ, MMA and Muay Thai in the gym and don't worry, the MMA training is about as intense as the taekwondo training you used to do. A lot of the guys are still around, Conor, Hugh, James and all those guys.

Anyway if you want to come down you're always welcome. Hope you're keeping well. Say hi to your folks from me.

    Barry

We don't have Kickboxing classes at the moment, just Kickboxing privates with Mauro and he teaches Boxing on Wednesdays. Right now we have Aikido, Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, Submission Grappling, Boxing, Conditioning classes, and we just recently kicked off our new MMA program.

Have a look at the timetable on our website to see all our current classes and courses. Monthly membership is 79 euro, for this you can do any of the normal classes on the timetable (it also includes BJJ and Aikido beginners courses).

If you're interested in Aikido, you're more than welcome to come and have a look at a class, we have 5 classes per week Mon 8-9 & 9-10, Wed 8-9 & 9-19 and Sat 10.15 -11.30.

    Hi Ciaran,

I have read your posts and even if you asked for a North side club I thought that you might be interested by our Wingtsun school. Effective in short distance, you will find similar concepts as in BJJ or Aikido, where you have to constantly adapt to the oncoming pressure; I won't try to explain more ( would be incomplete ..) so you can join for a first trial class. Or have a look to the video -trailer.
You will find more information on http://wingtsun.webs.com/ or you can call me at 085 773 2056. Classes will start again next week Tuesday 14th.

    Bye
    Massimo
