Hi, I'm just wondering do the DF take people who are looking to do work experience in it during Transition Year in school (4th year).

    -Thanks!

Custume Barracks in Athlone do a one week course for about 40 transition year students in February. I was at the last one and I really found it fascinating. We attempted to march properly and utterly failed:o Also got talks on what the DF does at home and over seas, whats involved when you join depending on if you do a cadetship or not and other stuff like that. You're also introduced to most of the infantry weapons as well as some of the vehicles. They also brought us out to Carnagh for a day (not allowed within 300m of the firing points when they're in use) to show how to build shelters, start fires and how to skin, gut and cook a rabbit on a campfire (that was the highlight for me:D ) as well as some other survival.. things:pac:
That's just a quick summary off the top of my head of what was done, so maybe other barracks around the country do a similar course.:)

I did a weeks work experience with the Air Corps out in Baldonnel when I was in TY (good while ago now!). There was ten of us altogether, and it was a structured week, basically meeting all the different groups, seeing the planes, helis, weapons ect. Was brilliant fun, and very well organised! Dunno if they still do it now, but would be well worth a shot to ring them up and see.
