I thought he was a black belt? I've been telling people he was

AFAIK Mariusz has a BJJ black belt under one of the Gracie's, but having met and trained with Marcello he wants to get a black belt in Marcello's system.

I personally would be happy with just one black belt :D

Well, there's no "system" in BJJ. You either are or aren't a black belt in BJJ. There's no 2 ways about it.

I mean if the guys a purple belt that's smashing, just super. So am I and so are a lot of lads around the place. I'm just curious.

Purple or black, still a higher grade than me so I'm not looking to call anyone out.
However, how does one go about acheiving a Dan rank in mma??

this is bullsh*t, there are 8 people from Ireland that have got black belt grades from this mike fella in everything from bjj to kung fu over the internet , has anybody checked his bio, he would have to be 500 years old to have all those grades, he must have a black belt in every martial arts in the world, now you BJJ guys know what us Kung Fu guys have had to put up with for years, as niall keane said in a different thrend a while ago, IN 20 YEARS YOU ALL WILL BE DANCING IN THE PARK...

    From the website:

BRAZILIAN JIU JITSU (The Late Grand Master-Carlson Gracie Lineage):
    *Certified-Instructor & Affiliated Corona,CA. School under Master-Rodrigo Medeiros (La Habra,CA. from 1997-2002*)

    *Certified-BJJ Self-Defense Instructor under Master-Carlson Gracie, Jr.
(Chicago, IL in 1997 at The Rivers North Gym)
*Certified-Brazilian Jiu Jitsu Instructor under Master-Carlson Gracie, Jr.
(Chicago, IL in 1997 at The Rivers North Gym)

Two interesting things to note. First, no belts are listed. Second, this Omerbegovich is claiming to be of Carlson's lineage. Curious then that this Domasat character is trying to grade under Marcello Monterio, who as a De La Riva black belt is also Carlson lineage.

Whatever is happening here, the bjj community should (i) encourage people to be open, legit and honest about their grades and lineage (ii) to bring people in and help them to learn proper grappling, rather than ostracise them and push them further towards the fringes.

    QFT.
Perhaps the Judo and MMA communities need to do the same:
"1st Dan in Judo, 3rd Dan MMA"

i dont believe that the irish judo assocation would except those grades, IMAC would noT eXcept the kung fu or karate grades and there is no such thing as a black belt in mma or as the website stated CAGE FIGHTING.

MFS, Chute Boxe and many other places give belts in MMA. Ultimately a belt is only recognition from the person awarding it and/or the group behind them.

CLIVE as a member of the board of the new irish bjj assocation, will your new assocation be excepting internet grades ?

I'm all for the idea of a proper national association but why would anyone worry about having their grade accepted or not by them?

True, but I don't think they give them out online, could be wrong though.

i hope you enjoyed your training in thailand, one quick question, do you think you learned something over there or would you have learned the same by watching a few utube clips of the guys training?

i would just like to point out that i am not having a go at bjj, im a big fan, in my opinion the best thing to happen to all martial arts in the last 40 years is the Gracies, they did away with all the myths that these old guys were peddling about secret techiqunes and got back to what martial arts are about, real fighting and i would hate to see bjj drop its standard like nearly every other group did in the last 30 or 40 years

Luckily I'm just the treasurer so I just have to hassle people for receipts :)

Seriously though it's a non-issue - BJJ isn't trademarked so if someone wants to say they're a three slash red headband, it's their decision. In any event recognition of black belts is done by the IBJJF.

Just because "Dr." Gillian McKeith got an internet qualification, doesn't mean all doctors are full of it. If Matt Hughes wants to say he's a black belt in MMA, I'm not going to tell him that there's no such thing.

I had a great time thanks.
I'm obviously not in arguing for internet learning and grading, it's obviously nonsense. I would just making the (completely off topic)point that if somebody is given a belt by their instructor, or their instructor's instructor in many cases, they probably won't be too worried if some outside assocation recognises it or not. But like I said, that is totally off topic to what is being discussed.

Clive your still a member of the board and you will have a vote on this subject or you should have, i also understand that you might not want to reveal your position on boards but this is something that you and the other members of the bjj assocation are going to have to deal with sooner or later, one small bit of advise, if your assocation is trying to be a NGB, if you dont sort this out it will be used against you, there are people from other martial arts groups that are going to try and block you and they have being dealing with IMAC and the sports concil for the last 20 years and believe me when i say they know which ears to whisper into, on this subject what will be said is that your not a real martial arts sure half them got there grades off the internet, i know thats completly untrue and only a very small % do it that way, but when has the truth stopped a good story, any national assocation should be setting the standards, thats what the sports concil will require of you, you have to decide what those standards are going to be...

As I say it's very much a non-issue at the moment. Recognition from the ISC is not something that is feasible within 3 years, and 5 is more realistic in my opinion. There are far bigger obstacles than blazer-wearing poison hippies at this time.

as the person who started this thread, i would like to say, a positive comment about a seminar degenerated into something negative - the grappling scene is too small for this. I train with the lads from husaria, they are respectful, hard training genuine lads, you will get some good training/rolling there, and maybe even learn some polish :), i would invite some of my old friends from judo and sub grappling to pop in, if you are in the area, to train.

Hey Bill, good to hear you're still rolling :)

Guys I genuinely thought the lad was a black belt. I've met him he's been at my tournament at least once. I'm only going on what I've read so I've no idea what the actual case is with affiliations, internet courses and all that.

I'm still not sure what rank he is now and I don't care that much anyway :)
