heiya guys any advice is welcomed!

my about 3 years old desktop:
    AMD X2 6000+
    Gigabyte onboard graphic mATX mobo
    2x1Gb DDR2-667 ram
XFX 8800GS 512mb alpha dog version
with an unknown generic brand psu:pac:
    running on Win7 64bit

the problem with this desktop is that i hate the noise comes from the 8800GS,it is just too noisy! It is an old desktop meant for basic use but i want it to able to run SC2 smoothly (at least as good as 8800gs). I am thinking to get a budget (quiet than the crazy 8800gs noise)card to replace it and get a 22'' monitor soon.

    any recommendation of the card?

i am also thinking maybe i should grab this currently on sale corsair 400W for the desktop:

Get a 550W corsair PSU so you can re-use it in future builds as well.

As for the card, I'd recommend the GTX460.

i'd like to get a gtx460:pac: but do you not think this old cpu(and the mAtx mobo+the slow 2gb ram) will bottleneck the performance? I just wanna put a little money fix this system and seal it forever, without the noisy 8800gs.

    i am thinking maybe a 5760 or 4650?

    or a 4870?

which one is good enough for standard gaming on 22'' monitor?

    4870 is a good card :)

Depends on resolution. If you're under 1080p I'd just sling in a cheap HD5750 and have done with it.

:Dok guys now i need to choose between a 1gb 4870 or 512mb 5750!they are exact same price on pix now! 4870 is a newer card than 5750 right?

would either of them run fine with the 400W corsair?

Wrong... HD5750 is newer - the larger first digit may have been the clue :p

The older card is the better one, but its thirsty as hell and seeing as even the last binning of the X2-6000 was a 89W part I wouldn't run anything with a TDP any higher than the HD5770 on the same mobo as a X2-6000 powered off a (decent) 30A PSU :o:o

Seeing as the older card would require a new PSU I would recommend getting a HD5770 1GB if that 22" monitor is a Full HD model. If its just a 1680*1050 panel breath a sigh of relief (your PSU will! :pac: ) and grab a HD5750 ;)

ok for the sake of 20e difference i will go with the pix 5770 atm :D think i will get a full HD samsung 22'' this xmas.

just to make sure again would the corsair 400W cut the cake?

  • Moderators, Technology & Internet Moderators Posts: 18,381 Mod ✭✭✭✭Solitaire

Yup, should run at about 50-60% capacity when gaming :)

got the 5770 and Corsair 400w today. running smooth like my milkshake! such a quiet system compare to the old one :D i can only hear the fan noise during game now!

i will prob open the case again when i can buy the 2x2gb ram at less than 70euro :pac:
