Tax Assessment

    Hi

I'm just wondering about the legalities of this situation.

You have a married couple, who are being jointly assessed for tax. IE: They are both named on the same tax douments.

One of the persons in said marriage goes AWOL and is no longer living in the family home with their partner.

Am I right to assume that they are no longer entitled to joint tax assessment?

    thanks

I would imagine the fact that they are still married leads one to believe that they are entitled to carry on being jointly assessed. I'm not even sure if one can opt out of joint assessment or if both have to agree to opt out of it?

tax forum might be better :)

a married couple can opt to be taxed either,
    1.single
    2.separate
    3.joint

These 3 options remain for the couple when they are separated too
