Hi Guys,,,I'm paying the VRT on my 18 Turbo on monday. The thing is i'm not sure what type of plates to get. It will be 82KK---- but should they be metal, or plastic or what colour for that year. I do remember a neighbour have a new 5 back in 83 which had black plactic plates with silver numbers which appeared to be slightely raised within the plastic---Any ideas??
    Thanks
    John

The correct (i.e. period style) plates for your 18 Turbo would be either -

    - White front and Red rear (plastic) plates (with LARGE digits), or

    - Black front and Rear (Plastic ...with LARGE silver digits)

IMHO, too many people fit modern-style plates (i.e. with SMALL digits) to 70's/80's cars which just dont look right.

AFAIK, 'Monoplate' in Cork can supply correct plates (at reasonable cost) Phone 021-4883127

I believe 'Europlates' in Dunboyne, Co. Meath may also be able to supply correct style plates - 01-8251804

Ah go on, you know you what to johnf2020!

Trouble is, and 82 KK xxxx is 8 characters + 2 spaces. Which is far too many to crowd in with old fashion digits as they are HUGE. (That plate above was done between myself and Europlates)

So technically, it's crappy modern style plates only. The only exemption to use a pre-87 style of plate is either with an original pre-87 number, or a ZV.

If it's 82 KK 1xxx you might be able to squeeze it in using 79mm digits (size as per second row).

(Plates as above - and white/silver on black, etc - available from Paul MacNaughton 087 223 0254 http://www.autojumbler.ie/

Don't mean to hijack this thread, but I want these type of plates, with this EXACT type of font:

    IMG_2817.jpg

It's a font that been around since the late 80's, seen on many pre-'91 plates too. Seen them on alot of cars, but don't know where to get them. Any suggestions?

If you find a supplier please let me know too?!

There is an article in the current 'Irish Vintage Scene' about a truck which was restored by Jennings Truck Centre in the midlands....the plates on the truck are the same font as above, and look very fresh. Perhaps Jennings have their own 'in house' plate maker?

I find MacNaughton's prices a little steep tbh.
Europlate and Monplate seem to have more reasonable prices from what I have read.

    OP,
I'd suggest you go with the plastic plates, with larger old style digits. The old UK font (which is the font most Irish vintage plate suppliers now use) is slightly smaller than the old Irish font , and so you should be able to get the eight digits to fit.

Another good supplier is 'Framptons' in the UK.
He even does Irish red plates.

When I enquired, he didn't do fulled sized 21x5 reflective plates, only the UK size made to look Irish. I'm fussy me.

Any plate with rivet-on letting is going to be expensive, even more so if they are aluminium.

Those plates with that font can be got in white and red too.
