    Hey all,

I'd be interested in hearing from anyone who has experience with Citroen XMs - I've heard mixed reports about them, electrics, suspension etc.. I'm particularly interested in later diesel models. Are there many of them around? And what kind of money would it take to get a low mileage car in good condition?

I've had several XMs over the years.... Brilliant cars, if maintained properly. My favourite would be the Series 2 (1994 onward) estate models. Had a 2 litre 16 valve automatic one of these and it was a brilliant car.

The diesels... well there was a 2.1 and a 2.5 litre. The more desireable of course would be the 2.5 litre. The trim level to go for is the "Exclusive". Impossible to find in this country, so i'd suggest you go to the UK, where you can find decent ones for fairly little money.

I think there was an estate on here recently for free, and a saloon for 300

but a small fortune wont make a ropey one right.

    I fancy one myself.

Mk 1 electrics terrible, plenty of issues with current leaks resulting in flat batteries if I recall. Mr 2 new loom and gold connectors.

There was an XM in the family a while back.

An absolute dream of a car to drive. Comfort and ride quality second to none.

It is let down by electrics and niggly faults, and ours eventually died a death of hydraulic failure. (cant remember the specific issue but was definetly to do with the hydraulic system)

it's a shame to see these cars scrapped because of hydraulic issues.... The only thing that really goes on them are the hydraulic spheres, and they're cheap to replace.

Irish garages will charge aboutg €75 for a re-gassed one. This is quite expensive knowing that XMs have 6 spheres. However, you'd be an idiot to pay that kinda money for re-gassed spheres, knowing you can get brand new ones online (in Holland) for €31 each.

this looks like a good car, but overpriced. It's the VSX model which is the mid range model. Not the most desireable engine, but it's cheaper to tax than the 2.5 litre...:D

This was a good few years ago, It had other (rusted underbody) issues aswell.

If it were my car I would probably have repaired it, as I love the XMs, but the owner saw it as economically unviable against the price of the car.

Anything you do is not economically justifyable... They're really not worth much money, but god what a car... I really miss mine :D

Yes but it's the troublesome series 1.... top spec though... beware of cars that have been stored for years though

Thanks for the information - they sound like a great car! Funny thing is, I can't recall ever seeing one on Irish roads. Which brings me to my next question - is it difficult finding someone to do the work on them. I'm based near Limerick - I know there are some Citroen dealerships around here - would they be equal to the job? I know it's not rocket science but I'd just as soon take a car to someone who is familiar with it!

Now this is the biggest issue... There are people that know their way around the car, but finding the right one is a bit tricky. Engine wise it's not an issue, basic Peugeot engine. The hydraulics prove to be a bit more tricky.

Don't really know anyone in the Limerick area but maybe the Citroen dealership on the Dock Road might point you in the right direction... I know of one or two in the Cork area though....

As mentioned by 2CV, all engine work etc can normally be handled by a basic indy mechanic. Ours certainly was.

For the hydraulic issues, any citroen dealer should be able to work on them. AFAIK its the same/similar system as is in the Xantia

That would be a correct statement! :D

The Hydractive 3 system was shared by the Xantia and the XM

There's a fella (I think his name is Hurst) in Carbury Co. Kildare who appears to have some sort of Citroen fetish. For 20+ years he has had several Citroens in varying states of repair around his garage and house. Used to be CXs and GSs, then XMs and BXs, now its mainly Xantias. Might be a useful person to know :)

Anthony Kelleher in Ballyvourney, Co. Cork might be an option as well

    Correct...

Kevin Hurst is his name. 046-9553072. Decent garage. Brought a dead BX with a cracked cylinder head back to life for us a few years ago.

He had a an old Acadiane there the last time I passed.
