NCT looming - is my car worth fixing?

My car is a 3 door Ford Ka - '97. It has some rust on the edges of the doors, the boot doesn't open because the lock is stuck. The passenger door doesn't open unless you pull the inside and outside handles together (not as awkward as it sounds).

Given the age of the car, would you bother spending the few (I assume) hundred to get all these repaired? I see you can get a '00 BMW on carzone.ie for 2k so maybe it would be wiser to upgrade.

    Any helpful thoughts appreciated.

would you not send it into the nct, get your list of faults, and then get a quote for how much it will cost to fix?

+1 on that, you never know it might not be as bad as you think

Good idea. I had thought of that but the guys I usually use aren't too accurate with their quotes as they sometimes 'discover' something along the way. (They're above board, just a bit sloppy that way.)

I'll tell them I want an exact quote or else I'll take it elsewhere.

    Thanks a million!

I'ld say a BMW for 2k is gonna have just as many problems, if not more than your little Ka. And they're gonna be more expensive to repair.

Rust is always that is something you can't really fully fix. Like you could replace a broken mechanical part like suspension or bushes with new ones. But to fix rust on body work is more tricky and invasive. If its not deep you can use rust killer and stuff. But if its gone bubbly and flaky then you'll have to hack that bit out and replace it with new metal...

So upto you. If you wanna spend more like 3-5k, you could get yourself something that could last a few years trouble free if you pick something clean.
Or you could spend around €1k fixing your car and that will be cheaper...

Oh and do what Random suggested. That's the best thing to do first. Always good to know what all you need to get fixed before you start fixing stuff on your car...

whatever they do or don't discover you don't care about. you just need to get the nct list sorted.

    your story checks out....

though i wouldn't touch that compact personally, there's plenty of nice Bavarian stuff between 2 and 3k at the moment.
