Hi I just moved to Balla, from Limerick city - its a big change for me & i could do with some help/information... please!:(
I cant seem to get a reception for mobile broadband where i am, is an eircom connection the only solution to this? I didnt want to get tied into a year contract. Also is there a good take-away/ restaurant, reasonable price around here? chinese, european, italian! Any other helpful info would be really appreciated, thank you thank you thank you!! p.s. Mayo is beautiful, especially Achill! :)

I'm not sure about mobile broadband but check out Westnet. There is a connection fee and a yearly contract but you dont need a phone line and their service is excellent in my experience. Have a look for coverage in your area on their site.

I know this is cheeky and may not be allowed but in Swinford (not too far from Balla) we have a chinese, broadband reception, plenty of pubs and takeaways and I know of someone with a room to rent in their house!!

Isnt there a takeaway in Balla that calls itself Indian/Chinese/Asian/European ?? God only knows what it's like though. Plenty of options in Castlebar and Claremorris. greta Indian takeaway in Kiltimagh, Lahori Grill.

Westnet have service in Balla, Are you in the Village or outside? Depends on whether you have line of sight to one of their base stations, they will check it out for you though. That takeaway in Balla isnt great but there is a really good one in Kiltimagh (i think its that Lahori Grill place mentioned before).

As regards socialising in Balla, The Rendevous would probably be the most lively place to go. There are bands in Durkans the odd time also. Personally, i like Mannions, nice old fashioned pub with friendly staff. They have a trad session on a Tuesday night if you are into that sort of thing. For food, Mannions do a massive dinner for about 8 quid and also the Beaten path (about 2 miles out the Claremorris road) do nice food and they serve until about 8 in the evening. There is also food available in The Rendevous and The old woods (Dempseys) but i havent tried either of them.

Is that still open?? Is it operating as a pub?

Was closed for years but they revamped it a while back, nice pub area with a seperate restaurant space. Its quote close to my parents house so we sometimes go there for Sunday lunch.

thanks so much for those replies, i will try the take-away in kiltimagh. we've eaten in the rendezvous a few times & its good - nice mammy dinners! the chinese is bad, tried it twice, as is the indian :( ! But good to have the rendezvous. Have gone to Mannions & its our favourite pub here, so we're not doing too badly now, are we? getting the line checked for broadband & then we're sorted! thanks also to Swinford, we'll check out chinese there too.

It is indeed still operating as a pub, was refurbished a few years ago, they made a nice job of it. Good for a few pints on a Saturday nite before heading into Claremorris or Balla!

To the OP, welcome to Balla! It's a nice quiet town with a few amenities including the usual like the golf club, florist, laundrette, church, funeral home, GAA pitch and the oul fella on about the tans in the local. You shouldn't have any problems connecting up with westnet or eircom. The two takeaways in Balla are OK but there's better available in Claremorris or Castlebar. Luckily you're not far from both!
