Hi, I have recently bought a house and "inherited" a large approx 500L aquarium that is integrated into the house ie I'm stuck with it. So i'm going to now get into keeping fish it seems. I am really looking forward to this as it is something I have always wanted and I certainly don't want to waste the opportunity of having the big tank. However I know nothing about this pastime and now need to educate myself. The tank is in the living room. Its approx 2M x 0.5m x 0.5m. How much will it cost to set up with fish and equipment? More importantly how much will it cost to run this tank in time and electricity? Thanks for advice or pointing me towards it.

No idea how you are going to get it cleaned firstly! :P Secondly - go to an aquarium specialist and get yourself a few decent books. Its usually the lights that are the major running cost and they are mostly for decoration.

You can clean it with bleach but it means doing a lot (and I mean alot) of scrubbing. Dilute it and make sure that when your done you can't smell it any more

What do you want to keep? For that size of tank you could keep alot. Stock it slowly. Buy an external filter and let it run for a month or so and the start buying stuff.

For running cost varies depending on room temp, Heather type, fish stocked. Your esb bill kinky go up maybe €30-€60
