Very sad news indeed. My thoughts are with his family and thats some cv he has there, 21 times european champ aswel as olyimpic champion. Not familiar with the Judo world but a lot of respect for it so im sure its a big loss to them.

He's probably the most influential western Judoka ever, indeed the first Western to beat the Japanese at their own sport. I remember reading his story, and his opponent at the time Kaminaga was shunned by sections of Japanese society for not taking his own life after the defeat to Geesink in the 1964 olympics - in front of Kaminaga's home crowd.

It's always sad to hear about these things, a great scrapper in his time. Keeps everything in perspective. Anyone know what the illness was?

    RIP

Well its reported on various forum that he was ill for the last three weeks.

I guess at 76 it could be a lot of things.

I always find it strange how we read about these legends in their youth, and thats where they stay - forever young.
