    Hi,

I have a tell inspiron 1521 that is a few years old with a amd turion 64x2 tl-58 1.9GHz processor. I would like to know if I can run a 64 bit operating system on it as I recently upgraded the memory to 4Gb.

I know that it has 64 in its name I just want to be sure as it isnt clear.
    thanks in advance.

Simple answer is No, you can only run a 32bit OS. You do not have a 64bit CPU.

I don't know where you got that impression at all.

First off: the hint is in the Name. It's a Turion 64 X2.

    Secondly: Google is your friend:

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/AMD_Turion
Turion 64 X2 is AMD's 64-bit dual-core mobile CPU, intended to compete with Intel's Core and Core 2 CPUs.

Yes OP, you can run a 64-bit Operating system. As can virtually every modern Processor.

    From http://windows.microsoft.com/en-US/windows-vista/32-bit-and-64-bit-Windows-frequently-asked-questions
How do I tell if my computer can run a 64-bit version of Windows?

To run a 64-bit version of Windows, your computer must have a 64-bit-capable processor. To find out if your processor is 64-bit-capable, do the following:

Open Performance Information and Tools by clicking the Start button , clicking Control Panel, clicking System and Maintenance, and then clicking Performance Information and Tools.

    Click View and print details.

In the System section, you can see what type of operating system you're currently running under System type. Under 64-bit capable, you can see whether you can run a 64-bit version of Windows. (If your computer is already running a 64-bit version of Windows, you won't see the 64-bit capable listing.)
