Rooted my HTC Desire - what next?

There's far too much reading out there so to summarise..

I've have a O2 branded HTC Desire (was running 2.1) that I've just rooted (using Revoked). Actually, had a massive scare as I was running the 0.83 bootloader so recovery went to a black screen. So I had to provide this custom image (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=748618) to get the recovery area working. I did a backup to my SD card in there and that's about all I've done so far.

Which ROM's do people recommend? Looking for the best one to optimize battery, any or all support Google voice actions (or is that even supported, or is that an app)? Should I go for Froyo?

Only have a 4GB microSD card right now.. would this be sufficient enough to do most stuff? Have a 16GB Class 4 on order from Amazon.

Well 1st thing you should do is install rom manager from the market. This will partition your SD card for you so you can used the good apps to SD method, you can reboot directly into recovery with it and perform nandroid backups.
ROMs are all down to personal preference.Im using a Modaco RC8 RC1 based on the Froyo release and I love it.Since the desire is a popular phone though theres plenty to choose from on XDA Developers especially

^^ +1 to that. I've used a few ROMs and I'd second the MoDaCo suggestion.

Here the thread for MoDaCo with Android 2.2 (FroYo) and HTC Sense:

Also, Rom Manager. Use it to perform the nandroid backups and install new roms, which having to manually boot into recovery mode.

    +1 for LeeDroid

I like the optional circle battery mods and the wake on trackpad option.

also, install and setup SetCPU - seems to be a great help with the battery.

Apps2SD+ is the big plus for rooting imo - removes one of the great limitations of the device in a sensible way - make sure you create your ext3 partition before installing a rom

I'm using opendesire and its the best I've used so far. Brilliant power control options. About 40 hours battery life with moderate usage. No sense, but that's an advantage foe me. Very stable, stripped version but with all important aspects. I haven't used modaco or leedroid so can't say its better than those.

OD also has Google voice commands and an option to overclock to 1300 MHz with setcpu.

Set CPU is great for saving juice aswell.

Would also like to recommend awd launcher. Very clean launcher with great customizable options. The hidden dock is a great advantage over launcherpro

Cheers lads. Lots of reading to do.

I can tell you practically anything about jailbreaking an iPhone but this ROM's stuff is all very new to me.

It can seem a little daunting at first, but in no time you'll have a few different ROMS backed up on your SD and can switch between them with Nandroid. :D

I would definitely try a stock Android ROM, just to compare to the Sense version and to see which aspects of each you prefer. I like the stock phone and contacts etc. and the HTC camera and widgets.

I'm in the exact same boat as you Basq. Got a helping hand from PAMG to root my Desire. Loving it now. Set myself up with market enabler and Google Checkout. Buying apps and games now. Well worth the effort. Haven't messed around with other roms other than stock 2.2. Might change it up in a while and see what's out there.
