How high do birds fly?

I was getting the bus into town today around 6pm and saw some dots up in the sky flying in and out of the cloud. I figured they were seagulls or something, but never thought they could fly that high.

Is it normal for birds to be able to fly that high? I dunno how high nimbus clouds are but I'd imagine they're high enough!

Well they fly high enough to get into jet engines at 34,000 feet!

certain geese make their migration over everest also

I was flying a cessna 152 a while ago near Drogheda at 2500ft and there was Swallows about the same altitude.
