We have a first time visitor coming from the US and I want to take her to stay somewhere different and unique.

Like any american she'd like a castle but the ones I've looked at (ashford, adare, dromoland etc) are all plush and grand and I'd like to find something more gritty, more real, a castle where the stone is still exposed inside.

And it dosent have to be a castle. A yurt on an island perhaps? A round tower? A lighthouse? ANy suggestions would be welcome.

Oh and we're in connemara so I'd like somewhere at least a few counties away.

    Thanks!

Would self catering accommodation interest you?

I'd love to hire a lighthouse myself.

Was at a wedding there and while the castle itself was excellent the bedrooms let the whole experience down imho.

Maybe Co. Clare isn't far away enough for you, but these places might suit.
