Hi, i've been sorting out my cousins machine for the past few days. I've wiped all the crap off it but i'm left with pciide.sys infected.
Avast cannot repair this file, if I quarantine or remove this file then the system won't boot.

Anyone got any idea of how I can repair this file or any tool that will do the job?
    Thanks

Realistically your best bet is probably to boot from your installation disc, get into the Recovery Console and copy a clean version from the disc to your drive. You'll need the password for the built-in Administrator account to do this.

Thanks, I don't have the disk but can download the file. If I download it then run the machine in safe mode with command prompt and copy over the file will this do the job?

Probably would be okay but a safer way would to be to boot the machine from something like a Linux Live CD (e.g. Ubuntu) and copy whatever files you need that way.

Ye I had tried going the safe mode with cp route but the file had already loaded at that stage so it wouldn't let me overwrite.
Im just burning a suse live cd now so hopefully that'll do the job. Thanks
