Back in the late 80's maybe early 90's there was a series shown on RTE which had Australian soldiers fighting against the Japanese in a jungle.

I cant remember the name of it but for some reason i think it ran for 2 seasons and in the final episode the group of soldiers were captured and executed by being beheaded. It wasn't particularly graphic but I remember how awful it was to watch

I think it was based loosely on real events but that might not be the case. Anyone any ideas?

the only similar Australian show I remember was The Sullivans...

it was set during WWII, and a number of the sons went off to fight the Japs, but I dont remember the scenes you are discussing.

I was thinking it was The Heroes too. But it wasn't on for 2 seasons, and they didn't all get beheaded at the end ( though during the credits it did say that they went on another mission the following year and they all died during that mission ).

Actually remember it being a really sad ending too. Think because it didn't end with a happy ending it's stayed with me since i was a kid.

Well, it looks like it is The Heroes, as there was also Heroes II : The Return ( which would be your 'second season' ) and in this one a lot of them were beheaded at the end.

A quick look at Wiki gives us this :

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Operation_Jaywick

which is basically the story of The Heroes and this :

which is basically the story of Heroes II : The Return...

Bingo thanks guys. It seems Jason Donovan and Craig Mclachlan were in it! Nostalgia is just not what it used to be.

From what I remember, Jason Donovan in the first one and Craig ( Hey Mona! ) McLachlan was in the second.

I also remember the shock of the sad ending, un-used to such things as I was at that tender age!

Reading the details brought back the ending. They had 2 endings, one was the Japanese official version which said they lined up and calmly accepted their fate (as a Jap soldier would supposedly) and the guy with the sword did a good 'clean' job at removing head from shoulders.

The second version was from a Japanese soldier who saw it happen and said they were dragged screaming and knocked to their knees (as a western soldier would) and the executioner needed a few blows to finish the job....

All a few weeks before the war ended. I was only about 12 when i saw it so it stuck with me.
