Getting a brand spanking new car in January, choice of...

Mondeo Style 2.0 TDCi, new model w/alloys, bluetooth etc

Mondeo is a choice of Saloon or H/back.

    or

Passat Trendline 1.6TDi Bluemotion fairly basic spec from what I can see.

    Opinions??

DO you not think it looks dated, hasn't changed in 5 years.

    Chauffe, Marcel, chauffe!

Mondeo. Better drivers car, more space, more poke and a fresher model than the Passat. And you're kinda saying it has a better spec. Probably more reliable too.

As you say the Mondeo will be the new model / face lift. When is the Passat due a lift? Current model is around a bit longer than the Mondeo. From sitting both side by side, mine and a reps car in work, the Mondeo does look bigger. How does the 1.6 diesel hold up against a 2.0 Diesel

Only started to look in to this today, looks like the Passat will be 105 bhp, the Mondeo 113 bhp. I thik the Bluemotion in the Passat slows it down 0-100 kph in 12.4 secs seems very slow to me.

    New Passat due early 2012

No performance for the Mondeo yet.

Passat (B6 I think) current model is out of production. New model due January / February with pricing available from October ish.

Pricing is going to be similar, but don't know about specification.

Outgoing Passat Trendline was fairly decent becuase they threw a load of extra's at it, but still not anywhere near the spec of the Mondeo.

Facelifted Mondeo Style model (due to dealerships around end of October) has Alloys, A/C, Fogs and Bluetooth. Expect the new Passat Trendline in with wheel trims and not much else.

The VAG 1.6Tdi is a fairly decent unit, but it depends on the type of driving. It can bog down a bit at low revs, but isn't as bad as it sounds. Haven't driven the new Mondeo yet, but I'd say there is more usuable torque in that lump due to the size.

Current Mondeo, 1.8TDCi, is 125bhp and does around 55mpg. Don't know the 0-60 speed.

It's the figures for the new facelift model I'd be interested in, 2.0 TDCi, probably not to be found yet as the car hasn't been launched yet

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 51,360 ✭✭✭✭bazz26

1.8 TDCi is being dropped for the facelifted Mondeo. New Passat in Jan/Feb is a heavy facelift of the current Passat which has been unsale since 2005.

OP, are these the only two options available to you? I'd be looking at the Opel Insignia in this segment, much fresher design and a better overall package than the other two imo.

There is already a 2.0TDCi in the Mondeo range, depending on the re-tuning they give it, figures should be around the same.

Only the 2. Glad to be getting a choice at all tbh.

I've driven the Insignia and it's a quality car alright

In that case I'd go with the Mondeo, nicer car to drive and the intigrated bluetooth would be dead handy.

Mondeo for me. Updated model will give it a welcome lift and the engine will be superior to the 1.6 in the aging Passat. VW is nice in Highline spec, but Trendline is grim.

    You got there before me.

The new model will have the 2.0 TDCi, with 113, 130ish and 143 bhp, depending on how much tax you want to pay I presume :)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,171 ✭✭✭af_thefragile

The Passat is very comfortable to sit in.
And the bluemotion is very economical too.

Though the notion here is that they're very unreliable although my uncle has one and it hasn't gone wrong once...

Have to agree, can't understand why they're still not putting something like m/f steering wheel in a car at the price it's at. The spec on the new car will be interesting to see.

    Style gets the 115ps engine
    Zetec gets the 140ps engine
Titanium gets a choice of 140ps or 160ps variants

All manuals have CO2 of 139g so VRT / BIK category B.
Powershift gearbox isn't available with the 115ps so all are either 140ps (Style & Zetec) or 160ps (Titanium only). CO2 for all Powershifts is 149g so VRT / BIK category C.

All Passat models did get a MFSW in 2010 - even the Trendline. Fingers crossed they keep that for the new model, but I wouldn't hold my breath.

If you want a car early January, order now to make sure - that means it will have to be the Mondeo.

VW say they will have Passat's available for January delivery, but I remember when the last one was launched..................

With the new Passat coming in the new year, you would be mad to consider the current model.

I.6D in the current model passat is a snail of a yoke.

The "new" Passat is just a heavy facelift of the current model. All running gear is carried over. ;)

Go for the Mondeo ...... holds the road extremely well, very positve steering, proven model and servicing costs will be lower than VW....plus if there's a new model Passatt on the way ...... they'll always be teading problems.

For me the Mondeo is newer and there should be facelifted versions available with their new engine line up, if you could try to get a 140ps it probably a better all rounder

Ford seem to be putting a lot of effort into developing their diesel engines see leading edge stuff they are doing in North America

I see new Mondeos are also available with the 2.0 diesel 163PS:eek: which are developed in conguntion with psa.

i would go for passat ,nicer looking, decent drive,vw badge and so holds its valve well, cheaper tax too

mondeo is ok too but resale prices drop like a stone, so alot money lost when you go to sell it

I would not put much faith in the VW badge thing, it doesn't carry much weight these days as their car's reliability is average, nothing like what their adverts would like you to believe.

Also I'd never base my decision on what hold's it's resale value the best, VWs hold strong resale values because people are willing to pay silly money for them because they believed the marketing speel coming out of Germany. Then in turn they look for silly money when they sell them and the cylce continues. BTW we have had 3 VWs in our family and 2 of them have been more troublesome than any other make we have had. Anyway it sounds like the OP is getting a company car so resale value will mean sweet feck all to him.

Looks are a personal thing, personally I think both cars wouldn't win any beauty contests like most mid size family cars. The best thing the OP can do is test drive both cars and see which one he likes the best.

From the OP, it looks like a company car. So, no worries about depreciation.

Yeah it's a company car job so no worries about depreciation, sevice costs, tax etc so it's purely down to personal preference.

I'm leaning towards the Mondeo, guaranteed it'll be a higher spec, new Mondeo is a great car on the road and God knows how long the Passat is gonna take to hit the streets.

Anyone see any pics of the new Passat interior, I've seen some external ones.

I think it's the same layout as the current Passat inside - possibly slightly different.

The MKVI Golf is practically the same as the MKV interior, and the new Passat is to the old Passat what the new Golf is to the Old Golf.

Why are VW so slow to make major changes to their range? The Passat has been virtually untouched since launch in 05, the Golf has gradually changed over the years but there's very little major new launches with them.

When Ford launched the Mondeo in 07 it was a massive change from the previous model.

Still leaning towards the Mondeo I think

VW aren't any slower than anyone else really. 7 years is the typical time-frame for manufacturers, with a facelift 4 to 5 years in. There'll always be exceptions, but that's by and large the norm.
The problem might be down to the amount of VW's on the roads, makes you think they're around longer than they are. For example the Alfa 159 still seems like a fresh car, but it came out only about 8 months after the current Passat.
Has to be said though that VW are passing the Mk6 Golf and "new" Passat off as more than a facelift, when in reality that's all they are. The Mk6 Golf is really a Mk5 Golf that's cheaper to make!

Is there any thread in the Motors where someone enquires about a car choice where the Skoda Octavia doesn't get a mention. :D

    Really?

And that's without going totally over the top pricewise...so eh...it's got a big boot but otherwise is motoring white goods.

OP, I'd go for the Mondeo too especially if you dont pay the bills. If anything for the extra power if you're on the road a lot. Really comfy for long spins too.

I am looking at my own just outside my window and damned if I can see a differnence.

I note a few people here saying that there is a new 2.0TDCi unit with lower emmisions coming but looking at ford UK site they list the 2.0 unit as having 115bhp (same as old shape). If it is the same crap engine with dodgy injectors, I would'nt buy one in a fit.

It's not the same engine. The 1.8 has been around since the Sierra, it has been killed off due to strict new Euro V emission laws from next Jan.

Yes, they also have to be standard on new cars sold in the EU from next year afaik.

Do they have to look like tacky Audi ones? Why can't they just be like Volvo who've had them standard for 10+years

The most shameless and horrible product placement of all time was that Mondeo, it was just wrong, and managed to beat the wrongness of the Z3 in Goldeneye.
The Mondeo is a good car, but it's shyte looking in fairness. Looks clumsy.
