2004 BMW 320D Turbo issue?

In the last couple a days I've noticed a lack of pickup on my 2004 BMW 320D (80k miles) when driving, even with heavy foot, no accelaration. Initally thought I was in wrong gear, only happens for a few seconds and car is fine then.

This has happened a couple of times now, from basic research on the internet it seems to be a turbo issue. I have no real technical knowledge regarding cars and was wondering what could be the possible causes before I go to the garage.

Any help/advice would be greatly appreciated

I'd be more inclined to blame either the Mass Airflow Meter, Injectors, or the Lambda sensor. They're more common causes of poor acceleration on a 2004 320d.

As above, wouldn't think that's the turbo, classic MAF issue symtoms really. MAF sensors suffer signal degrading that really effects performance below 2500rpm. Is it low down the rev range you have the issue ?

That's a relief as replacing the turbo looks costly from reading previous posts.

It happened this morning when i set off for work and I don't really go above 2000rpm until the engine warms up.

If it's either the mass airflows sensors, injectors or Lambda sensor are these realtively easy to fix?

    Many thanks for the feedback

Start by doing the cheapest thing first. If it doesn't work, work your way up to the dearest.

First thing I'd do is maybe clean the MAF. If nothing happens here, move onto the o2 sensor. It's usually the one at the start of the exhaust after the manifold that goes wrong. No need to buy a new one just yet, maybe get it tested first.

With regard to the injectors, I don't know much about them but you could try one of those STP injector cleaners or something similar.

I'd do all this before going near a garage.

    Hope this helps!
