Irish Rail refusing to honour family tickets for matchgoers

Irish Rail have announced that they will not sell family tickets for match-goers this Sunday.

A very large number of Kildare fans typically head to Croke Park by train, and I think this last minute decision is scandalous. A family ticket allows up to 2 adults and 4 children to travel for a little over €30 which is less than half of what the cost would be if every passenger bought an individual ticket.

According to their press statement, they are concerned about potential volumes - while at the same time they are not laying extra special services (which would normally be the case for big games).

It all seems like a cynical exercise in price-gouging, and I think Kildare people are going to be very upset.

A number of people have already bought family tickets, so the last minute nature of the announcement is also disgraceful.

I've just set up a Facebook group to try to demonstrate the level of anger.

No luck with Liveline - they're doing a 'Funny Friday', they did suggest doing it on Monday but that would hardly help!

I'm not sure how tickets are checked in Kildare and Newbridge but in Sallins you just hop on the train and the ticket inspector comes around. Anyway I've noticed on a match Sunday the ticket inspector is never around. And tomorrow the train will be so packed that even if there is one, they wont be able to move through the carriages.

For the last game, people were queing at the ticket vending machine in Sallins for 15 minutes before the train arrived to get a ticket, and not everyone could get one by the time it did. At Heuston station then, there was a load of people jumping the stiles or two people going through on one ticket. The staff there saw this and legged it over and stopped some people. I dont know what happened to them after that. If it was me they had of stopped I would have told them to feck off, Iarnroid Eireann are a joke.

Absolute disgrace but not surprising in the slightest. I pay 50euro a week to get to work daily and the petrol would be more around the 35euro mark. O stop, the anger!! Iarnod Eireann..cop yourselves on !!

I stopped using Irish Rail about three years ago, they as an organisation are morally corrupt and are run solely for the benefit of their employees and pander to every union request. I will be driving up the All-Ireland Hurling final from Kerry in two weeks time for about €50 including fuel and tolls on the new Motorway system and the same again for the Football. A return train ticket is €72 from Killarney to Heuston and there will be two of us travelling, saving the two of us €188 over the two trips. Now the savings are even greater if you have a family.

Irish rail are a joke and last time I used them I had no choice as it was that or pay for two weeks in Dublin Airport car park as Ryanair's time from Farranfore did not sync with my flight times from Dublin.

they aparantly are NEVER valid on sunday according to their terms and conditions.
Dont see what the fuss is so.
They havent removed the validity for the game as it was never valid on Sunday anyhow in the first place.
Family - One or two adults and up to four children under 16 years of age
(a minimum of one child must travel).

One Day Family Tickets are not valid for travel on Fridays or Sundays or on days when special control measures are in place.

Iarnród Éireann must hate the GAA, I went on a non-stop Dublin to Thurles train for a Cork v Clare Munster championship match a few years ago and the train didn't stop in Thurles! Went onto Limerick Junction and there was nearly war on the platform, the driver had to get out and turn around and we just about made it.
