    Hi Guys,

First post on this site so hope I am doing this right.
I'm trying to figure out a problem with a 2008 pc where on exiting the internet and going to work on spreadsheets etc the pc freezes. I can work fine if I do not enter internet first. I use internet explorer 8 and have tried removing and re-installing software. I am not a whizz on pc's but I can get around a bit. Any suggestions please.

    Thanks

It's usually the best to try and download either Google Chrome or Firefox, and try using either of them (instead of IE8), to see if the problem occurs with one of these.. Sounds like a plugin, or a problem with a particular website...

It freezes permanently after it, or just for seconds/minutes ?

If it's for a few seconds, Internet Explorer could be clearing out all the pages it downloaded in it's cache.

If it's for a few minutes or more, I'd try updating the network card driver.

I'm assuming you have a decent virus scanner running, and have an anti-malware package installed ?
Eg. AVG free edition, and MalwareBytes.

I don't think a lot of people use plugins with IE beyond activex controls (shudder).

I think it's more likely to be some form of malware. As the previous poster suggested trying an alternative browser will at least give more of an indication where the problem lies so we can narrow it down.

Could be low amount of RAM/Memory in the PC, so exiting IE which may have had lots of cache in memory and then asking the PC to load excel + spreadsheets means a minute or two of swapping out between IE and Excel to get going. For a basic PC with windows I'd generally say 1Gig of RAM is needed for reasonable performance. Also 3 Gig of free disk space to allow windows to do it's memory swapping.

Do you hear lots of disk activity while this is going on? Or see the hard disk activity light flashing a lot.

Do what the others say and try a different browser if that fixes it then great.
