Ok, I'm going into first year and I just got my orientation pack.
What's the language evening classes option all about?
I'm not studying French as part of my degree, but I'd love to keep up my French and not lose it all.
What's the general consensus about these classes? Is anyone else considering them or am I the only loser? :D

From what I've been told the language modules aren't that great, however all I know of is Spanish. I don't know about French. The classes are usually between 7-8 or 8-9 (something like that) in the evening, so after a day of college it might be exhausting.

There are other ways of keeping up your French. There's a French society in Trinity, it's a new society. I think Modern Language offer classes, at a fee. Also the French department organise 'le pub francophile' every wednesday at 8pm to practise speaking French in the Duke pub beside Trinity.

In second year you should have the option of studying French through Broad Curriculum, which replaces a module of your course.

I'm confused. I just filled out the form to do the french too, does it cost money or is it free? And can I just not go if I don't like them? And I can't do it if it's on a Friday night because I get the bus home Friday evenings so how do I find out if there's a class on friday evening? So many questions, sorry!!

I haven't heard good things about these classes. Most people seem to think they're a waste of time, although I can't make any judgement because I've never been to one.

Nonetheless, I think they are indeed free.

Every single year this question is brought up without fail and every year the same answer is given. Honestly, you will be wrecked tired after a long day at college. Why punish yourself with more optional language classes with extra homework. Your main course will only suffer, as well as your socail life.

As already mentioned, the classes are in the evening after 7pm. At this time every other fresher will be out in the pub or at a party making friends and having fun. For the first week of classes, there will inevitably be a few clueless first years who turn up. By the second week, more than half will have copped on and have stopped coming.

But by all means ignore the general consensus and go anyway (like Curlyhatescurls)

You're not the only loser! My I didnt get my first choice of french with my degree that I'm gonna do and I really want to keep it up!
Loved it for LC and want to do my erasmus year there. Also they assess you and give you credits, people I've talked to said they regretted not doing it (note however I dodnt meet anyone who did do it!!!)
Do we apply for them now or at registration??

    >> implying you actually learn stuff in the evening language classes

Look, your only an incoming first year so I'll be polite. This thread has come up a million times. Here are links to the most recent ones:

Read them and you'll see why only idiots apply for these courses. You'd learn more French reading Le Monde online or joining one of the language societies.
