Has anybody any idea how to close the browser, my wife left it on all night connecting to a site through 3G that auto-refreshed it's content, this could be very dangerous if you're paying by the KB.

    It's an LG optimus.

Dolphin browser hd has an exit button that kills the process when you close the app.

    Otherwise, maybe a task killer

I find a task killer the best way. Also if you're in that predicament a 3G data counter see how much is being downloaded.

Go into the browser and hit the back button until you are returned to the home screen. It is for all intents and purposes closed.

You could also use an apn control widget to switch off 3g if you want to stop all background data. I find quick battery and quick settings very good

Android is designed so that the OS takes care of the life of an application, as in Android will decide when it needs to kill the APP otherwise it will stay alive in the background.

Using a task killer is a very bad idea and will lead to bad data in your applications when you kill them before they get notifitied of the stages in the Android lifecycle.

I suggest not letting your wife use the phone in future :D

Doesn't exactly solve his problem of stopping it using data though.

I'd recommend a task killer, just don't be trigger happy with it. Never had any problems using it on my desire.

OP, do you mind me asking what (kind of) website ? My browser reloads the last viewed page (as correct, thanks to persisting app state) and I've never had a problem of continuous connection after browser close.

Now, I'm on a Desire, which may (most likely) be a different browser, but my understanding of "closed" apps is that once they are not in view they are inactive, unless they specifically have background tasks.

Get Advanced task killer from the market...works great...has auto kill and you can add a widget to kill all apps running in the background...

you can also add the power control widget to your screen to turn of data package

No need to kill the app.

In the browser you can press menu -> windows and then close the offending browser window. If you're left with no windows open it will then automatically open your "home" page which is normally google.com - but this won't be doing any auto-refresh stuff - so safe to leave in the background.

Just press back instead of home and he's sorted, or be more aware of how Android works and be slightly more careful, its not very hard to switch it off properly.

The Desire should have an option in the settings to gracefully kill running services so there is no need for any sort of task killer on the Desire.

Android does this anyway when it needs to free up memory or resources so premptive killing of them is pointless.

Kill all apps running in the background is pretty stupid too, the whole idea of Android is that it can handle multi tasking.
