Switching Courses in DCU

Hi, I'm going to DCU, I've accepted Aviation Mgmt., with Pilot Studies (DC117). I like the sound of this course and it interests me and I was kinda happy to get it, even though I missed out on my first choice. Anyway, I know this sounds a little pretencoius but, if I didn't like this course, would I be able to switch to another course within DCU, say a course in the Faculty of Science and Health, which I find more suitable and interesting (got an A1 in Bio and I was aiming for Physio)??? So long as I meet the minimum requirements?

Now don't get me wrong I do really like aviation, and I probably will love the course, but if it doesnt work out, I'm just thinking of whats best for me and what I am really good at, which is science and that. Just want to keep my options open :)

So is it easy to switch?

The general principles for switching course is that you have the CAO points requirement for the course and there are free spaces.

If your first choice was Physio and you've some how ended up with this Aviation studies thingymajiggy I'd seriously rethink your previous decisions. I'd reconsider accepting this course because if you do complete it and realise you want to go back and do different course you will have to pay the fees yourself.

it sounds like you've made a mistake with your cao and you should reapply next year, possibly repeat the leaving cert.

If you didn't get the points this year the only way you'd get in to the course next year (after a year of doing aviation studies) is if the points next year dropped below what you got.

No my CAO was good, it was just very varied. I had a load of interests and ideas. I have great interest in avitation and flying, as a future career, the same with physio and science. What I am considering is that if I find that the avitation course is not for me, say after a few weeks, would it be easy to switch, within DCU?

If I can't then I would drop out and repeat. Its a good situation, at least I have a college place.

As it is, I am doing aviation I'm just finiding out what my other options are if worse comes to worse :)

Thanks for the reply by the way

I understand that, I'm just looking to see what my options are in DCU if worse comes to worse.

If you got the points for the course and there's space for you, switching is straight forward enough. I switched from first year PHA to second year AP and I found the staff were very helpful and had no problems with me switching.

This is what I was trying to say.
You can switch, but you still need the points etc. and there needs to be a vacant space on the course.

Most of what previous posters have said is correct. DCU will do their best to facilitate any student who wishes to change course, if what they are studying isn't right for them. For the most part, you need the CAO points, however if you have demonstrated good results and academic ability while in DCU, sometimes if you fall short with the CAO points, it will not matter. If you wish to transfer to a similar course, sometimes you may be able to transfer to the second year of the programme. If it is a completely discipline, you will start in first year again, and will be liable to pay tuition fees for the amount of years you have completed already. Internal Transfers are really up to the chairperson of the course, that the student is wishing to transfer into and really depend on places being available.
