Does a 'sunroof service' exist??

I have a golf mk4 that stinks of dampness in the morning. I had an issue before with water in the footwell but that was solved by clearing the sunroof drains.

In the past few days the car has been stinking of dampness in the morning. I have given a good feel of the interior but I cant find any wet places. The headliner around the sunroof is quite stained and I'm wondering is there an issue with the sunroof.

Is there such thing as a sunroof service? Anyone know of a good place in South Dublin that will sort this? Anyone heard of issues with vw sunroof's?

The only other place it could be coming from is the plastic trim on the door sills. I have seen water build up there on rainy days.

Yes, but its not called that. You just tell them to fix it and lube up the sunroof running gear.

On the mark 4 with a sunroof I think there are front and rear drains.
I havent looked for the rear ones on mine but I have seen pics of the hatchback models with rear drain problems and it looks quite bad.

Water can build up at the door sills too. There is a rubber seal that goes around the door behind the door cards. They can perish and cause water to come into the foot well. The front doors went on mine.

Also, check your rear wiper for leaks. That went too for me.

The mark 4's really dont get on well with water :S Never a problem myself, nothing major cause I didnt mind the DIY part of it.

Ill be checking all the drains again though.

    Anyway. Best o luck.

    Rear wiper fix

Note that the water pipe can pop just inside the headlining in the roof and directly connected to the wiper motor

    Sunroof drains info.
With regards to the drains what you should do is open the roof. Get a glass of water. Pour it into the roof opening. The channel where the drain is located. Do one drain at a time. Check if the water comes out. Its very obvious if the drains are clear. If they are not then, using your best finger abilities, squeeze, massage and generally mess about with those drain nipples and with any luck some dirt and goo will come out.

I just found out where the rear ones are now so I best go out tomorrow and massage me wagon.

Common fault in the MKIV's was the tubing that goes to your rear washer would come lose and leak in to the roof lining. Check if it's that.

Sound. Thanks for the replies. I'll have a fiddle around tomorrow with the stuff in those links.

The staining in the headlining seems to be just around the sunroof so I reckon ill be able to write off it being the washer. I also never really used the rear washer and have way too much wiper fluid in it so I reckon Id get that chemical smell if that was leaking.

A damp boot floor is a tell tale sign.

What it could be is blocked drains and the water overflows. I hope so. Easy fix.

I seem to be having problems finding where the rear drains are on the car. I don't have the same drains as the golf in the vw vortex link. I found two parts that might be the drains but they seemed to have no holes to let water out and I dont want to drive a skewer up there without being sure that they are the drains.

Here are the parts in question, the black circles. They are rubber and move up if pushed on but they dont seem to leak water. They are located between the wheel and the back bumper.

Anybody know if these are the drains and should I try and stick a needle into them??

No, they're not drains, they are either plastic clips or rubber bungs purposely used to plug openings so don't go punching holes in them.

Don't know about the Golf but you looking probably should be looking out for a small plastic pipe somewhere near the wheel liner or coming out beside the tailgate hinges.
