reference from current employer; medical

    Hi all,

Wondering if anyone can give me a steer on this. HR agency has got back to me saying that after 2 interviews a company is looking to speak to my references. They've mentioned in particular my current boss. He doesn't know that I've been looking elsewhere. I'm pretty sure he wouldn't be happy about me moving (not being cocky or anything, we get on well) but I think he's pragmatic enough to see the terms and location of the new job being better for me.

Is there any tips anyone can give me for approaching my current employer, telling him I applied for this job that I saw and that it's got to this stage? Is it usual to ask current employers for references? tbh I always thought it wouldn't be.

Also if I do sort the references there would be a medical, from looking at a few threads it doesn't seem to be a big deal-am I right?

    Any advice/experience welcome

Unless there is a firm job offer on the table I would not allow them to speak to your current employer. I have to say that I am surprised to hear that they are even asking to do this without feeling obliged to make some kind of commitment on their part, they could always make the offer conditional on the medical and the references.

    Good luck with that,

    Jim.

Having decided I was going to say it to my Boss, your reply, a few other threads and thinking about it again is giving me second thoughts. While I *think* my boss will see why I'd want a better contract in a more suitable location it still seems very unorthodox (even in the current climate which is I guess a buyers market and they can dictate terms) I Probably do need a firmer offer from them.

would not do this, if the other job doesn't pan out you don't want to mess with what you've got.
Most agencies in my experience are aware its not practical to get refs from current employers so surprised they asked.

I posted a thread on this recently as I am in the clearing process for a civil service position. I have been told that once my garda vetting clears, they will be looking for a current reference. I have already told them that I am not keen to do that as there would not be an official offer on the table. I am concerned that my current employers wouldn't give a good enough reference if they knew I was in clearing for another position..especially if they knew me getting the new job was based on their reference!
They said that they might accept a reference form my employer like one you would give to a landlord/bank (I have already submitted two relevant and excellent references for the position already though).
Maybe the agency would accept something like this provisionally?

Medical for a permanent position (in my experience) can range from a form to be completed (by you in some cases, in others by a GP) or a proper medical examination. Again, this is only the permanent jobs I have held.
