PR for a new business ?

Don't really know where to start with this, I'm hopefully going to be starting a new online business in the next month & obviously need to get it "out there".

Funds are VERY limited, so I'm looking for the best ways of getting it done on the cheap.

I have a couple of ideas such as those small roadside signs you usually see on the motorway etc (anyone know the law on that?)

Also do I have to employ a PR company to get press releases published/broadcast ? Will the media outlets only take it from their own sources or could you send it in "blind" (I'm guessing you'd be crossing fingers & hoping for the best)

I suppose this depends on what you are selling. Perhaps you could give more detail. Its a very difficult thing to do as a lot of new websites are popping up the whole time and a lot of people are in the same boat.

    Best of luck

    Hi iMax,

The low hanging fruit would be the people already searching online for your products/services.

Road signs, newspaper ads, tv commercials etc are all demand generation.

For people to then find your website they either type the URL into their browser (if you've scored the URL into their psyche), or they use a search engine to "google" it. You could call being found on search engines as demand fulfillment.

I always advocate trying to be found by the people already looking for you first. They are the easiest to sell to, and the best to learn from about what your market actually wants. From there you can work your way back up to people who might need your products/services but don't want them yet.

    I hope that helps.

I don't have details but I recently heard a little bit of Joe Duffy's radio programme where they were talking about those motorway signs on trailers etc, that you see parked alongside motorways. Don't take my word for it but the gist of the conversation was that the NRA were cracking down on them and fining the sign owners. It might be worth contacting your local authority before going down that route.

You don't necessarily need a PR company, although they will have good contacts. You could start by contacting your local newspapers and radio stations to see what they can do for you. You may find that they will want you to purchase some advertising before they will give you "free" publicity.

Listen and read your local media for a while and try to get the names of journalists / reporters who are covering local business stories and new business launches. Then contact them directly, with your story. Remember that journalists are looking for stories, so try to give them something that would be of interest to their readers.
