I see this game "Elemental: War of Magic" just released now by Stardock on Monday (23rd Aug) - anyone else come across it/tried the beta - is it any good?

Apparently it is unfinished and kinda broken

I preordered it last year and dropped in and out of the betas. The betas weren't playable at all. They just used the builds to get the concepts across to the users and get feedback. I didn't mind at the time because I thought it seemed like a good idea. So I didn't really bother with the beta.

I loaded up the release version on Tuesday and it seemed a lot better. There's no real help in how to play the game. You just jump in and try it out. It's basically a mix of turn based RPG and strategy.

There was a new patch last night but I didn't have time to play.

Just to continue on this. When I tried to play the release version on Tuesday night, I had no idea what I was doing. I started off with my character standing on the beach after a shipwreck surrounded by a fog of War. After a few steps I was told I needed to build my city. It took me ages to find the option to do this as it only seems to appear if you're on a certain type of square.

Then I built the city. It told me I needed to buy weapons in order to defeat some enemies that were close by. The shop only offered clubs which is what my village militia had anyways?

    I stopped after the battle.

There are some tutorial videos on the games website (above) - it probably would have made more sense if they'd incorporated it into the game, though perhaps the campaign does that for you ?

No the campaign starts off with a very generic background story, then sets up character's first quest and dumps you on that beach.

Stardock have been having (more) problems with the shipping depot. They sent me an extra copy of the collectors Edition.

Spent a few hours playing it today. The latest version now has some tips for the user which makes it a bit easier to understand.

Blows Civ 5 out of the water imho, but then I haven't enjoyed a Civ game since 2.

Have you had any trouble in battles with your units constantly missing enemies?
I'm playing the campaign. I got to the stage were you're tracking the survivors of a destroyed village and you end up in a battle. I had 7 units and destroyed all but one of the enemies "the banished". He only had one hit worth of health but all my units kept missing. I got out of the battle with only 2 survivors.

I know there were some bugs that caused this with archers, but I was seeing in with melee units as well.

It's not that there's bugs. It just feels unfinished. When you first start it isn't very clear what you have to do. They have improved it a fair bit with a basic tip system but Inthink it needs a bit more. They'll probably be adjusting the balance a lot over the next few months.

I ended up picking up this game the other week (with a couple of friends) and spent a few hours over the weekend playing 1v1 and 2v2 (with AI) multiplayer games. It's got a lot going for it as a game - some great concepts and ideas and it looks good (apart from a few glitches) however overall the multiplayer is still quite buggy and hung/crashed a couple of times - there seem to be a number of options which aren't yet implemented too and the AI is woeful, balance also seems a bit off.
There's a patch planned for later in the month - here's hoping it cleans it up!

Just an FYI - the patch has been released for this - I've not yet tried it but according to the patch notes - it seems to address lots of the issues.

I didn't get a chance to download it yet. Don't know when I'll have the time to play it again.

Just starting download, the new reviews seem to rate it much higher than before with a lot of new fixes since last patch.

looks like it could be fun for a few hours worth of play

Finished campaign in about 5 hours. Game is very meh, I wouldnt bother paying for it.

.. although I have a copy on its way to me if anyone wants to buy it ;)

Oh and on the crashing\bugs etc. I had to restart game 3 times due to "Out of Memory" errors.. but apart from that it was fine
