windows xp problem,fan only runs with a disc in the drive

Title says it all really,im running xp and the laptop will overheat and turn off because the fan will not turn on but it turns on for 10 seconds when i switch laptop on and will work fine if there is a disc running in the drive. Anyone encountered a similar problem or know what to do? i've googled but no joy
