Private insurance on a commercial vehicle.

I asked this in a thread, but it got lost so here it is again.(sorry for the repost)

I have stuff that needs to be moved and a van would be the ideal way to go about this. Now, most vans have a DOE. I have seen a few with NCT but they are few and far between so what I am asking is; Can I buy a van with a DOE, tax it privately and insure it privately? I understand that the DOE has to be done every year, but aside from that, what are the conditions for commercial vehicles for your everyday shmuck like myself?

Or is it just wishful thinking? :(

No you can't DOE is linked to Commercial Tax
In order to tax a commercial vehicle, you need to provide a Valid DOE cert to the local tax office and pay a fee which they will convert to a CRW (or is it the other way around?) and you get your commercial tax disc back.
Most Insurance companies will ask you if the vehicle is taxed privately or commercially and base their quote on that.

I don't think we got an answer to that.

Points: you can buy a van with a doe, you can insure it either privately or commercially but it will depend on the van body. If it's a camper van or mini bus it could come under the same classification as the people carrier.

A standard panel van will require commercial insurance, own goods with SD&P.

To get SD&P on the tax side you'd need to tax it privately.

As you know from the last thread where you posted, this is precisely the issue that's not yet resolved.

A van is a commercial as far as the DOE are concerned and as far as the NCT are concerned. The NCT won't test it and the DOE don't to private. But under the DOE a van is a commercial whether private or commercial, which means it needs a DOE cert.

So we go round in a circle once again.

The tax office have not given a definitive answer, and so far no one has answered this.
