Changes to folders not showing until folder is refreshed

Very recently my XP Home PC has stopped showing updates to folders in real time, but if i f5 or go to a different folder and then back, the changes show. Also, and folders with pictures are very slow to show in thumbnails or tiles. Any ideas ?
