Travelling from New York to Canada and back on J1?

I've been in New York for the last 3 months on a J1 visa. I'm thinking of heading up to the Canadian side of Niagara falls and possibly Toronto during my last week here. The only problem is I've left it a bit late to send off my DS 2019 form to my sponsor. They say to give it 2 weeks, but I leave my apartment on the 31st and so will have no address for them to send it back to.

Is this absolutely necessary to cross into Canada and back again? I want to come back for my last day or two and my flight but I won't be working or anything. Can I do this or will it cause a problem? Could I re-enter on just a holiday visa?

Any help would be much appriciated.

Well if your visa expires before you want to return then there may be the issue of the visa waiver but even then you are allowed 30 days after your J1 to travel freely so you shouldn't need anything.

I had the same issue going down to Mexico (decided two days before leaving) and I chanced my luck. I had no hassle coming back in and I'm sure Mexico border is much stricter than Canada. I would suggest calling your sponsor to double check.

I rang my sponsor (Intrax) and was told that there usually isn't a problem but that they can't guarantee anything if they haven't stamped the documents.

    I think I'll chance it :)
