I thought people might enjoy this article on the 'war' between LTE and WiMax.

    Intel is hiring GSM/3G/LTE staff
Intel is buying GSM/3G/CDMA/LTE assets (IP and Companies).

    The "war" is over
Fixed WiMax has won for Outdoor Fixed Wireless networks (no use to Intel as it's not chipsets in laptops like WiFi), except on LOS 5GHz to 30GHz bigger channels where DOCSIS over Wirless wins hands down on performance and cost.

LTE has "won" on Mobile. The only two significant Mobile WiMax Operators have endorsed LTE. Clearwire for later and the Russians are changing now. Intel has put maybe €100M into Imagine's Irish Mobile WiMax. But at 3.6GHz it's doomed to be erratic and poor compared with Fixed Wireless or Fixed Wimax using only outdoor radios and can't compete on coverage with 3G/HSPA. Often no better despite being "4G". See http://www.boards.ie/vbulletin/forumdisplay.php?f=1147

So Intel instead of a Centrino WiMax/WiFi chippery in MID, pads/tablets/slates, netbooks and Laptops is going to have GSM/CDMA/3G/LTE + WiFi to compete with Broadcom and Qualcom.

With the serious hype that was surrounding Wimax it's unsurprising that it has failed to deliver and is now dead in the water. There was claims going around not too long ago that were completely unrealistic.
