So what's the story with starbucks opening in NUIG is it actually going to happen as i've been hearing rumors that it's a no go. Would love if they did open up here despite the fact that they are a huge multi national chain but whatever i like my iced coffees.

It's like a cookie hot chocolate, only with ass instead of cookies.

Nobody goes to starbucks for an actual coffee.... Anyways it seems to jsut be rumours but perhaps now that the semester is about to start we will have concrete evidence in the next couple of weeks.

Well there are signs up on the windows of an bialann stating that starbucks is coming soon. I think that's pretty concrete

No, what you said the first time was right, the comma shouldn't be there. Perhaps "flavoured cold coffee" would have been more succinct. Maybe he was thinking "cold-flavoured coffee"...

    I like grammar.

I though it was "cold flavored " some new type of coffee i was thinking. Is Starbucks awful expensive ?

I've heard from my sources there will be a starbucks in the new look An Bialinn along with a couple of other famous international franchises. Score :)

Y'know, for a once off it's fine, but if it's the kind of thing you'd be getting everyday it actually starts to mount up pretty quickly. I lived in Vancouver for a while (Starbucks everywhere) and I realised some days I was spending as much on coffee as I was food.

So on one hand I really want them to put in a Starbucks for that yummy chai/vanilla latte fun, but on the other I know I'll save a ton of money if they don't.

    Any word on when?

There's something on the right in the following link:

    http://www.campusdish.com/en-US/HE-IE/NUIG_DesignB_HIDE/
Coming Soon-Campbell Catering, has teamed up with Starbucks, the industry leader in premium coffee Check out the new engineering building which will be offering a premium high-street speciality coffees and teas, iced coffees & blended beverages, at a discounted price, while incorporating the Starbucks ethos and principles, and complementing NUIG’s values.

    It's still pretty vague.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,534 ✭✭✭Dman001

Sounds like they will be selling Starbucks coffee but isn't an actual Starbucks. Isn't the new engineering building still in development?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,653 ✭✭✭yer man!

Will this be like a kiosk so or like the old Java city place? kinda crap not having the proper thing there if they're just going to sell their coffee from the same machines in the main food area in Bialann

If there gonna do Starbucks then id imagine they'l put it in properly....like they did in UCC! Can't wait for it! =D

Can't wait for some starbucks. Fair play to the people involved in getting it here, a proud day for all when it opens. I know a couple more 'big name' franchises are in the pipe lines too - will be a fantastic choice for college consumers in the near future :)

I wish people would either keep schtum altogether or just say what they know. This "I know something you don't know" business is annoying.

Well it's at the early stage of negotiations according to my contacts in the SU. All I can divulge is that they are of the American 'fast food' variety and would be a sure hit with the wants and needs of the modern irish student.

A pawn shop is also applying for a license to operate on campus and this is currently under consideration. With certain students hard pressed for cash for nights out and books this may be a welcome addition.

McDonalds, KFC and Burger King have all expressed interest i've been told. As I've said the tenders are at a early stage and the SU are considering the respective submissions. It is likely only one of them will actually be granted a license to operate.

God I hope that doesn't happen.

Would it nat have been easier saying that from the start...also, what other American fast foot franchises are there. Im guessin you dont know really what one and are saving ur arse there by naming the main ones that could be there.

But thats just a guess :pac:

KFC only have the only branch in galway and are interested in expanded. McDonalds were rebuffed by previous SU's but still maintain an interest. [These are local franchises by the way so it will be a local businessman taking on the risk]. Burger King i heard mentioned also but the first two are definitely the most likely apparently.

Why would you hope not WesternNight? They will bring employment to students on campus along with offering students a wider variety than simply that over priced canteen food we've put up with for years. I can't see any negatives.

Negatives - Increases chances of obesity, and all that. that seems like a good enough reason to stop them coming here. maybe just for dramatic effect, they'll stick a kiosk in the Gym.

hmmm, how about buying bread and all that in dunnes/tesco's and making your own lunch? works out cheaper, and healthier.

Cumann de Barra, you sound an awful lot like NUIG_FiannaFail that we had a few months ago. seeing that you only signed up yesterday, and looking through your previous posts, makes me very wary of what you post.

Shíte quality "food". That's why I hope not. I'm all for increased employment. I'm also all for having variety. McDonald's and the like isn't the type of food that should be on student campuses...there's plenty of that everywhere else.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 17 Cumann de Barra

Well the SU believes the demand is there and I've no doubt if/when it happens students will support it and it will be a financial success. Causes obesity? In fairness a lot of homemade sandwiches could do that too :pac: You know what you're getting and it's a free world, not Soviet Russia!

You know what? I don't believe for a second that a pawn shop will be allowed on campus, plus there are already several in town. Either you provide concrete evidence or I delete the relevant (or in this case irrelevant) sections of your posts. Mod. And less of the coy rumourmongering.

Just because its there doesn't mean you have to eat it. Tbh, i'd prefer an Eddie Rockets or Pizza hut.

    Obviously.

Doesn't mean it should be encouraged, though :p

I'd see it as more providing choice for whoever wants it. The nearest McD I know of is headford road/Shop street, nearest supermacs is near the hospital and the only KFC I know of is in a business park way outside the city. There's already subway in the bialann, the bialann food itself, and smokies which have decent healthy options. I'm sure for some people, fast food might even be a healthy option compared to what they throw together :D

Something I'd love, would be getting McFlurrys and sitting outside concourse/library on sunny days between/after lectures. :)

    Feck the American places... Wagamamas!

I'd kill for an Ed's New York Pizza outlet in the Bialann. I can imagine it being very popular too!

+1 Eddie Rockets would be cool. Charcoal grill should take the canteen down by the SU bar theyd do a mint! :pac:

Not a big fan of their coffee. However, reliable wi-fi near the library would get me in there ;)

yes it is. seen a few signs on the bialann doors, saying they're brewing it there

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,286 ✭✭✭WesternNight

I don't mean to burst anyone's bubble or anything, but the coffee is pretty much exactly the same as what was there before. Just a little bit more expensive. I wouldn't get too excited about it

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 252 ✭✭meeka

I can't say anything about the actual regular coffee, but the mochas are definitely different! (This coming from someone who had several a week last year...) I've had starbucks in dublin a few times and I do think they're more similar to that. Of course, it could just be subconscious...

Anyway, they're 30c more expensive than they used to be so I think I'll be going to Smokey's instead from now on!
