iOS4 is giving me really bad headaches

I updated my iPhone 3G to OS4 a month or two ago but ever since I've done so I've had nothing but problems.

Here's the thing. I upgraded to OS4 while I was staying in America. I unlocked my iPhone before I went over and stuck an American sim card into it while I was over there. I came home, put my old Vodafone sim card and that's when I noticed some problems.

First of all, when I set my region format back to Irish (ie, have the numbers formatted like (+++) +++ ++++), my language then gets automatically set to Irish, even when the language setting still says English.

The whole iPhone isn't in Irish, just the date and time on the home screen, the days of the week on my messages/email, that kinda thing. When I put the region format back to English it all goes back to normal, but then the numbers appear as 08742 900202, rathen than 087 42900202. I've been using the English format since my Irish is basically non existant, but having the numbers look that way is quite annoying.

Secondly and much more worringly is my complete lack of GPRS/3G connection what so ever. I've updated my carrier settings completely, I've updated the software to 4.0.2, I've restored the phone to its factory settings, I've done absolutely everything under the sun and nothing has changed.

It's not just in one area either, it's everywhere. And everywhere the same thing happens. I only have the little circle in the top even though I have 3G enabled. When I turn 3G off and back on again, 3G finally appears but not without my reception dropping down to 1 bar. I try to connect to any sort of internet but it goes back to GPRS almost immediately and just says no internet connection after about 30-60 seconds of searching.

If you visit the Vodafone forums you'll have noticed I've been in contact with their reps about this (thread here) and after a painfully slow response from them they eventually said they don't know what is wrong and get it sent in for repair.

So before I get that ball rolling, can anyone help me at all with this? Is it a Vodafone problem, and iOS4 problem, an iPhone 3G problem?! Are the two problems related at all?

    Aka, help! :o
