Did the car actually overheat any steam etc? Maybe your radiator fan is not kicking in when it should and when it did kick in the temp went down. Did you check the coolant level?

I hope it didn't stall as a result of having overheated without your noticing it. How's the coolant level?

Indeed if it stalled down to seizing because of it overheating things will not be good.

    I should elaborate.

I had the same problem OP, car overheated with steam coming out. Turns out the thermostat was totally shot.

    What year and engine?

you may check the coolant level.top it up wit water to get u to the garage and keep a bottle of water in the incase it runs low. It needs to be checked immediatly or you will overheat the engine and blow the head gasket

Head will be bent in a hula hoop already.

And lucky if it hasn't picked up on the cylinders

well i dont know about the cylinders as the timing belt snapped on mine once and didnt do any damage to the engine but if there is a white or blue smoke coming out of it then it will definatly be the head gone and will need to be skimmed and a new gasket put on also. Worth gettin all the coolant pipes checked as well as the water pump incase there is any coolant leaking out

They don't do any damage to the valves etc when the timing belt
goes on the 8v models as they are sunk in the combustion
chambers in the head, but once they overheat at all the head will
be warped and need skimming, I used to skim 6-10 of them per day.
