If you werent against hostels I'd recommend the Flying Pig Hostel (downtown) - very close to Dam Square with very friendly staff. Private rooms in July cost us around €40. Other than that I have heard that "cheap" hotels in Amsterdam tend to be very very poor quality which is why we went for a hostel instead. We also stayed in the Park Hotel which was by Leidseplein which was lovely but not on the cheap side. Other than that, anywhere near either Dam Square or Leidseplein would be nice!

You don't specify when, or for how long you intend staying in Amsterdam! However, generally priceline.co.uk (name your own price site) is one of the best sites for getting 4* hotels at a low rate. I got the 4* NH Amsterdam Centre Hotel, last October, at just under 60 euro for a double room.

It's usually the Movenpick; NH Carlton or the NH Amsterdam Centre hotels which are in play. You will not know when booking which particular one you will get. Also its done on a prepaid basis and room only.

Note: most of the Amsterdam 2-star hotels have very, very steep stairs. We would have booked 2* La Boheme Hotel, if we had not succeeded with Priceline.
