Where can I get Ford's OE shocks?

Today I called up the Ford dealer and they quoted me €100 for each shock (and another €100 for each spring).
Which I think is wayy ridiculous price.

Unfortunately www.fordpartsuk.com doesn't have any shocks for sale so do any of you know any other place where I can get Ford's OE shocks for a more reasonable price...?

I can get performance aftermarket shocks + springs for £300, all four of them. But I'ld like to keep my car stock for insurance purposes.

So if anyone know a good place, it'll be great.

    Cheers.

€100 euro each for Ford shocks is I reckon a good price. Only change the springs if they are sagging.

I've only ever had to change springs once when I broke one in the back of a Micra over a "small crest"

Shocks are leaking so they need to be changed. Also the front end has gone very wooly... It dips in under breaking and such.

You'd be better off selling that car IMO, seems like an awful moneypit

Hi I recently bought two shocks for my Focus off Micksgarage.ie got the 2 delivered next day for 90 total. They are KYB shocks which are good brand even tho site said they supply lips shocks!:) Any motor factors I priced couldnt come close to this price. Got same price off Main dealer as you also.

I agree, from all of your posts it seems an utter heap of sh1te, if an old car needs shocks, springs, clutch and engine work it's fit for the scrapyard. Cut your losses and let the thing die. You are throwing good money after bad with this one. Although I would imagine the springs are fine, I would think all of the cars I have ever owned were all on the original springs, most of them were on the original shocks too. I would be surprised if your springs were worn.

I wouldn't be throwing OE shocks at it either, get the like of Boge from a factors, stay away from cheap sh1te like Gabriel and Monroe.

nothing there to point to the springs being fecked really.

I will agree it has turned out to be a bit of a lemon but its not too bad.

Here's what I need to do this summer:
    New clutch assembly
    New suspension
    New bushes
    New rocker head gasket
    If possible new break lines

Then it'll probably need a new exhaust back box come time of NCT

    Then for next summer:
    rust proofing
    body repairs
    respray

It sounds a lot but after this the Puma should be running good as new!

And as I'm doing most of the work myself, It shouldn't be more than a grand and a bit in total over the two summers... Then after about 3yrs I'll buy myself a 2nd hand M3 or a Z4 or a Lotus Elise... something nice like that...

The one's you recommend, wouldn't they make my car "modified" as its not OE??

    I was looking at these:
    http://pumabuild.co.uk/catalog/product_info.php?cPath=1_68_174&products_id=946

They've got a decent reputation at the Puma forums. Though they're quite hard and a bit crashy apparently but make the car handle much better through corners and high speeds on smooth roads...
Like that's a lot cheaper than buying shocks from the Ford dealer... But then I'll have to pay 100eur or something to the insurance as the car becomes "modified"...

And another plan was to just buy the shocks and keep the springs that are already on the car.
Then I could later replace them for these:
    http://pumabuild.co.uk/catalog/product_info.php?cPath=1_68_174&products_id=946
They're ford approved and supposed to go on the OE shocks... Got very high reputation at the Puma forums too...

    ..

I would doubt it, fitting a bosal backbox, moprod pads, LUK clutch, QH waterpump, Hella headlights etc doesn't make your car modified, they are spurious replacement parts. Anyway Boge are OE on many German cars.

    ^Where would you get those??

There's stuff on eurocarparts.com for real cheap. But it all looks like very cheap aftermarket stuff which would be much lower quality than the OE stuff. I'ld better off be going for the performance stuff...

    Like these ones:
    http://www.eurocarparts.com/ecp/c/Ford_Puma_1.4_1999/p/Car-Parts/Suspension-and-Steering/Suspension/Shock-Absorbers/?625595050&1&5db7a645cbfb3931c4de5567aa1a92bd2eda5140&SHKA

Though the rest stuff like clutch etc is not very expensive on fordpartsuk.com.
Its OE Ford stuff and fair bit cheaper than what the dealers quote here...
    http://www.fordpartsuk.com/shop/puma_14efi-clutch_kit_1382.htm
For £59+vat its cheaper than the LUK one on eurocarparts.com and what Ford is selling here... though it does take £25 pounds in delivery but I'll be ordering a few more parts so it should even out...

    Are you serious ?
Any idea how much paint costs, and take my word for it, you won't be doing most of the prep work or painting yourself.

The Boge shocks or all the other sh1te I listed ? :D
Motor factors, ring around and ask them do they stock / can they get you Boge shocks for a 1.4 Puma. Boge shocks aren't cheap though so don't expect them to be peanuts.

^The Bodge shocks... Are they as good as the OE ones??

I'll do the rust repair and prep work...
then send it for painting... Only on the outside. Inside is fine...
But that's next year and it depends on how much money I've got to spend on the car...

Just fyi like, after it's sanded / rubbed down whatever all reputable bodyshops fill in all of the car park dings etc. As it's no doubt metallic, priming, painting & lacquering won't be done for less than €1000 unless you're getting mates rates ;)

Aah... then I might have a go at painting it myself... if I make balls of it, well, its not gonna make any different to the car as the body work isn't 100% anyway.

I'ld like to see the car nice and shiney (like wheeler dealer sorta stuff ya know, keep a classic on the road, save it from the car chomper)... So I'ld reckon it would be around 2k I'ld have spent on the car. Come to sell it, I doubt it'll sell for anything more than €2k (it'll be in better condition than most other Pumas). And I bought it for €2k... So it'll be a total loss of around €2k on the car... Unless the engine goes. Then its another grand's worth of work finding and installing a good replacement... In that case I'll probably just sell it for under a grand to anyone who's willing to do the work and give it a new life...

But if the car runs well for another 3-4 years after all the work I put in it, I'll be very happy with it!!

As I mentioned before, its a brilliant car to drive! Makes you happy everytime you take a corner in it. Its just a really responsive car to drive and I find it better than most modern cars to drive before most modern cars don't have anywhere near the amounts of feel you get from driving the Puma. I wouldn't be spending this much if it was a Micra or a Yaris or some other boring hatchback like that. I do feel this car deserves a new, better life!

    Anyway, I found this:
    http://www.micksgarage.ie/autoparts.aspx?dept=311&ga=&b=57&AssemblyID=100121&MakeID=36&ModelID=3961&CarID=8981

They're LIP ones... dunno what brand that is...

    .

Boge shocks are class, get the gas ones if you can afford them. Although the likes of G max, and spax would be cheaper I reckon.

I might just get the Gmax kit if I'm gonna go in the direction of aftermarket performance parts. Its more affordable than the Ford OE stuff and performs better... And it lowers the car which will make it look nicer...

Only thing is I'll have to pay the insurance people for it.

I've gotta see which one comes out as the best deal.
    Ford OE shocks.
Boge shocks. (which I hope won't be classified as modified)
or the Gmax suspension kit (which includes springs too but I'll have to pay for insurance)....

They're not unless you lower the car, I promise :D

I've got to see what the Aviva's modified policy is.
Do they charge 15% for the lowered suspension + powerflex bushes I enquired about today (the insurance person had no clue what I was talking about which was another problem )
Or if its 15% flat for the car being "modified" in which case I can go about doing whatever i want to it and won't have to pay anymore...

I doubt insurance companies are that nice...!

You're letting your heart rule your head buddy. For the money you're going to spend putting this car right you'd buy something fun :)

Mechanical issues or bodywork issues are one thing, but you have both and that should spell the end for you

Well, I don't really have the money to buy a good car.
For around 500-700eur I can get all the mechanical bits fixed on this car. Which will keep the car going till next summer when I can get the body work fixed. It doesn't have any serious rust issue as surprisingly for all the problems the car has, the body is still intact, you really have to look hard to find any rust spots. Though the paint work is very bad and it has scratches + a few small dents which would need filling...

I really don't think I can get a better car for the money I can get this one fixed and running like new... Like this car handles like a dream! Even with its shot suspension! You've only got to take it on a country road and it comes alive... I've driven a few new cars and I still find my Puma to have much more feel and responsiveness than the new modern hatchbacks. Maybe some hot hatches like the Civic Type R, Focus ST and Golf GTi and some performance cars like the Audi TT might handle better than my Puma but compared to most generic cars, it's a much better car to drive. Sure it doesn't have all the modern luxuries and the interior is quite dated but its really a drivers car... Wouldn't go through all that trouble if it was a Micra or Yaris or some other boring hatch...

    Haha... sorry...
Actually I did think about throwing in the Integra as well but then I was taking too many names so I left it out... Next time I'll remember to add it before the TT!:D

TT handling is less than fantastic, 2wd ones are average at best.
