Hi, I have a Polo 97 reg, that keeps cutting out everytime I slow down or stop at a junction, roundabout etc, has anybody experienced this problem, and knows how it can be resolved?

    Many thanks
    Anto

Check the spark plug leads. They do deteriorate and need replacing. Had a similar problem and cured it by replacing the leads.

Could be your oxygen sensor, I had one go on a Fiesta of similar vintage - quite embarrassing cutting out all the time. Changing the oxygen sensor fixed it.

I used to drive a polo and had the spark leads replaced aswell. It wasn't cutting out as such then though, more driving sluggishly and misfiring.

However, i had the exact same problem as yourself, cutting out at junctions and when slowing down in traffic. Brought it to my garage, who ran carb cleaner through it and that sorted the problem.

Its one of the above id say anyway

I say it could be the Idle Control Valve.

If the engine seems to cut out everytime it drops below around 1200revs and the engine struggles to idle at a constant 800-900rpm (engine rather dies out if the revs drop low instead of idling) then its the ICV.

It probably needs to be cleaned or if its completely knackered then replaced.

The same thing used to happen in a 96' polo I was driving for a spell and have seen more threads on the same problem with Polos from that period previously. Mine used to cut out only when it was cold. A garage fixed the problem for me as I wouldn't be inclined to attempt adjusting a carb myself. Can't recall if they just cleaned and adjusted or just cleaned the carb but that rectified the problem for me.
