Dublin to Letterkenny?

    Does anyone know which would be the fastest route to Letterkenny from central Dublin?

    AA Route Planner is saying to go up the M1 and turn off at Ardee and then to go up via Monaghan. I would have thought it would have been faster to keep going on the M1 and cut across via Armagh?

    Any advice greatly appreciated!

    Definitely up the M1 and off at Ardee, through Monaghan, Omagh and Strabane.

    Though according to google maps the journey is only 8 mins quicker than going through Armagh so maybe listen to the traffic reports on the radio before you leave.

    There are four ways into Co. Donegal: Sligo, Enniskillen, Omagh and Derry.

    Sligo is the best road but isn't really a good option given that you're going to Letterkenny and Derry isn't really a good option given that you're going coming from Dublin.

    That leaves Omagh and Enniskillen. The Omagh way is the most direct for you if you go via Monaghan but I don't really know that route, if it's anything like Enniskillen the roads in the Rebublic will be much better than those up North. Going the Enniskillen way you'll want to take the M3 and head into the North at Belturbet coming out at either Beleek or Pettigo (both options there are equally as bad as each other IMO).

    Google maps calculates by distance and statute speed limit.

    The N2/A5 is the obvious route to Letterkenny. The main issue is whether you use the N2/M2 from Dublin, use the M1 and take the N33, or use the M1 to Dundalk and take the N53. The latter has more M1 but the N53 is not great in Louth or Armagh. M1/N33/N2 is probably best.

    Beware that Google maps give dodgy cross border routes, it avoids crossing the border even when that is the main road. Type in Monaghan- Dundalk or Monaghan-Belturbet to see what I mean.

    The AA routefinder is better.

    As someone who regularly does the route

    M1-Ardee->Carrickmacross (bypass)->Castleblaney (bypass)->Monaghan (ring road)-Emyvale->Aughnacloy->Omagh-Strabane->Lifford->Letterkenny (as irish_goat and ardmacha suggested)

    is the best route (most straightforward, better stretches). You can go on up the M1 to Dundalk or even to Newry, but I wouldn't bother. Don't go near the Sligo or Enniskillen routes if going to Letterkenny from Dublin.
