    hey guys
i have been training in bjj for the last 7 months and really enjoying it but about a 2 months ago my back became sore and tight resulting i had to take a couple of days off work , so i didnt train for a couple of weeks , so when i started training again i can only manage to roll once a week about two days after my training day my back stiffs up and gets sore and tight .
is this just a right of passage with bjj or just me? i am 30 years old and have played a high level of sports all my life and never suffered with back problems.
any advice from you grapplers out there would really help?

sounds like you have an issue.

I would go see a chiropractor or a good sports physio.

What is ur flexibility like? Do you work sitting down? You might have extremely tight hip flexors.

Pain is your bodys way of telling you something is wrong, you may have injured your back somehow.
Go to a doctor and get some proffessional advice, its not worth taking any chances when it comes to your health.

Yes but is your flexibility good for grappling? If your previous sports were running or cycling and you work at a desk your hip
Flexors will be tight which will pull at your lower back. Ask your bjj coach for advice on it.

The break won't do you any good if you're doing nothing to correct it. A bit of Yoga might not go amiss if it's inflexibility. I have DVD at home and I try to do a bit from that (I'm time poor so can't make a class) and it definitely helps. The key to your problems is the number 30 though! It's all downhill from here and keeping yourself supple is a major plus when it comes to avoiding injury. Simple hip mobility exercises such as over/unders, hurdle steps and fire hydrants can go a long way.

    Any links to these Barry?

I can't find the over-under one but here's a mobility warm up from another programme. I'll have a look on the hard drive in the office tomorrow.

    +1.

    Couldn't agree more with this.

I was cursed with back problems, mainly my rhomboids after a thick bollox neck cranked me. Spent a damned fortune on physio's without success until finding one who gave me various mobility exercises to do.

I do them religiously and haven't have a problem with my back since.

Age is the curse of the fighting classes :P

Sorry Jon I didn't post the link last night. Here's the youtube page there's some other prehab stuff on there too. http://www.youtube.com/informedperformance

Ask away if you're looking for anything in particular.

I found this stretching routine from Simon Hayes at Carlsons helped a lot.

Something similar happened me, I'm almost certain it was because I wasn't warming up enough. I normally spend 10 minutes warming up but I figured that personally I need a lot more time.

From personal experience the best physio I ever went to actually gave me exercises to fix the problem and to compensate what was causing the original problem (typical swimming related shoulder problem). I had seen two physios before him in Ireland but both just treated the end problem and didn't try to solve what was causing it (the guy knew after one look at my shoulders that I was a swimmer and that Frontcrawl and Butterfly were my best strokes).*

    So my advice is:
If you are still hurting after the first physio and he/she didn't give you any exercises to counteract the problem, then go check out another physio.

*To be fair the first two weren't bad persay, its just that they were unfamiliar with swimmers. Plus the second guy was part of a group that had their own gym where he actually went in and showed me the exercises and made sure I knew what I was doing.
