Most people mention the big cities, Paris, Rome etc but I'd certainly recommend Luxembourg - beautiful city, almost fairytale like, good food and bars - and reasonable

you can fly direct from Dublin www.luxair.lu

Luxembourg didn't do much for me!

If you haven't travelled much in Europe, it's difficult to beat Paris as a first project.

if you're going to Paris, fly Aer Lingus !! Ryanair too far out. For a nice city break though, fly down to Nice, beautiful, and you can day trip up to Monte Carlo for a nose about....:)

All good ideas, depends on what you want

    Berlin - history / nightlife
    Barcelona - people watching, modern
    Paris - arts / romance
    London - shows / sightseeing
    Rome - History / sightseeing / food

You'll get to them all at some point hopefully so just pick a date to go, and wherewver is the cheapest, go there!

(thats what I'm doing over on my other tab right now):D

No, don't do that. It spoils our fun. Let us know what you are considering, and we'll tell you what to pick. I can guarantee an interesting set of recommendations.

Then have a conversation with the boyfriend, and do what pleases you.

[Did I mention that Budapest is a good destination? Prague too. I also liked Munich. And, of course, there's Venice. And Vienna. Lyon ain't bad for a short break. ...]

As much as I love Budapest, I would not recommend it for a first-time trip by Western Europeans. There still is a flair of Eastern Europe to the place in many ways which I personally enjoy but which I am sure can throw off those not experienced a bit with travel around Europe. Prague, Kraków, Vilnius are all equally stunning places. But you should have a few trips around the West behind your belt before venturing there.

I went to Scockholm last spring, beautiful city, great shopping, restuarants etc. The highlight was on a boat trip in the Baltic sea that had to break ice. My logic for picking it was because it was different from the normal European breaks. It has a reputation of being expensive but we found it comparable to Dublin prices

Stockholm has a lot going for it, but I think restaurant prices are quite a bit above Dublin levels -- although not as scary as prices in Oslo.

One advantage for the inexperienced traveller is that just about everybody seems to speak English.
