Well I got offered business yesterday and accepted. :pac:

So I'm wondering and hearing about Glasan, I'll be going by myself, big loner. Anyone have a bit of advice? Would Glasan be okay etc. Was searching here and seems mixed opinions. Does the internet work since as they were fairly old threads.

    Cheers for any help.

internet is ok, can be awful slow sometime and it'll stop in the middle of loading vids on youtube and stuff. would be ok for just general browsing if you don't mind it acting up the odd time.

    Cheers that'll do me fine.

What you think about the twin bedrooms and stuff. Are they only for people going with a friend. Might be a bit awkward sleeping with a random. :D

Glasan is handy for going to college if you don't drive. Don't expect a deposit back at the end of the college year. In 4years I have not known one person that didn't have a problem with deposits. So if you decide to stay there. Hold as many parties as you want and wreck the joint!

Gleann na Ri are more descent to deal with and I have always had great craic down there and parties. Never a problem getting deposit back provided the place is left the way it was.

-Student villages are good way to meet new people and make new friends if you do not know anyone going to GMIT

If you are a girl it is alot harder to share with another girl. Two of my guy friends shared for 1st and 2nd year with strangers and it never bothered them and they never had a problem! And it brought down their rent a good bit. If you decided to take a twin there is always single rooms going even if they say there isn't -they are only too delighted to move someone into a single room as it means more money for them. So it would be worth giving a go if you thought you wouldn't mind

    I say Glasan.

I stayed there last year, you meet so many people really easily and it's so close! Pretty basic though :/ I wouldn't advice sharing a room, there's literally a foot between each bed which could be weird/awkward/annoying if you don't like your roomie.

Yeah, don't expect a nice deposit back... the most I've heard being given back is just under €400. I got €160 and my house was TRASHED.

Internet is temperamental! It can be okay, then be down for a few days.

    Thanks for the advice guys.

I've gone for glasan, here's hoping for nice friendly people in the house as I am a bit shy. :D

How are the student village getting away with not giving people back deposits? Are those gaffs all owned by independent landlords or are they anything to do with GMIT?

That's not cool or legal. Anyone followed up through threshold to get their cash back?

The GMIT Accommodation Office has a lot of dealings with Glasan. If you have trouble getting your deposit back, go straight to the Student Union and they'll try to help you out.

For anyone thinking of moving into Glasan at any point - this is what you must do:

Take photos of everything and I mean everything. If anything is broken or damaged or not up to par, photograph it and keep it on file. Possibly take it to the Student Union so they may be able to date-stamp it, if at all possible. If anything is damaged, report it to the Glasan reception too.

Go through your entire inventory with a fine-tooth comb. If even a spoon is missing, report it to the Glasan reception and get it replaced right away.

Be warned that they do have apartment inspections.

I, thankfully, have never lived in Glasan but have heard horror stories about them.

Don't forget that the SU vice president will probably be conducting independent inspections at the end of the year. He did last year, and in September of this year. This is free btw!

I've heard such ridiculous stories about what glasan have taken money for, so it is worthwhile!

jays they sound unpleasent. seriously screwing people out their deposits is not cool.

one of my biggest problems with them is the whole having to pay two big chunks thing. i just don't got that kinda money, especially at the end of august JUST before college, when i have had to buy books etc, and the grant isn't through yet. i think it is madness. and i have nowhere i could get it from.

some of the other student villages will take monthly payments, but i do have an issue with them. they say these must be paid from your parents bank account. that is fine if you are an 18/19 yr old school leaver. i am hoping to go to gmit this september coming, but i will be a 26 yr old mature student. no way my payment is gonna come out of my parents bank ac!

Gleann na Ri can take a monthly rent out of your ac...mind i wouldnt say its an amazing place either - not bad but not great

I think they mean it has to be paid from a financially secure/mature person's bank account. It'd be a bit of a risk to set up standing orders from like 200 18-19 year olds! Plus I wouldn't recommend living in student accomodation if you are 26.

why wouldn't you reccomend it if i'm 26? need somewhere to stay if i am gonna be coming cross the country that won't break the bank and i know nobody so there is nobody i can share with.

i think the reason they would'nt recommend it to a 26 year old is that they have presumed that you are beyond the whole parting stage because in a student village that is what they are known for. i did my degree in gmit but never lived in the villages too many horror stories , only ever used to go to them to party. i moved down there not knowing any one ,the galway advertiser is good for housing listings and some of the private houses for students in the area work out cheaper than paying out lump sums that you will more than likely never see again. i know people who got bills instead of deposits back, though i dont think they are getting away with the any more.

If you were to move into Glasan I think you would find yourself senior to everyone else by about 6 years, seriously man I would definitely recommend against it if you value sleep, sanity or any level of cleanliness.
I lived there when I was 18 in first year and it was savage craic, I loved it but it really is only for that year and at that age. I wouldn't go back now if you paid me.

Just look up the galway advertiser, daft or the gmitsu website and you'll see loads of people advertising single rooms with other mature students for much cheaper than the rates glasan offers.

ah ok. i was never THAT much of a party person, even at 18. now i like to party at times, but i am not one of them non stop party people. so i guess the student villages are probably deffo not for me then. i would b likely to kill them! guess i will have to have a hunt around and see whats what. going to the open day on saturday - gotta get up at stupid o clock to drive across but....

Just wondering with the Glasan payments

Do you pay the 1st Moiety Payment in full in the first month? along with the deposit? Or is it weekly/monthly?
