I am looking to get a Yorkshire Terrier pup - but dont know where to start - dont want to go down the "donedeal.ie" route as I hear there are many scammers selling them there!

I know many will tell me to rescue a dog - but thats not what I want and I also know many will tell me the health issues with Yorkies, I know all this so am just looking for some advice on where is best place to get a Yorkie?
    Thanks in advance

id never encourage anyboay to go down the donedeal route.
you have two options go to a reputable breeder, look up irish kennel club website(this can be very expensive).go to local pound, cheaper option, and you get the staisfaction knowing youve saved thier life

were are you located last time I was up in Ashton, they had quite a few yorkies

Can I ask why you dont want to go down the rescue route?

I got my second Yorkie from Ashton pound. He is amazing! Hate to think of what could have happen him.

    EDIT: http://www.irishanimals.ie/terriers_homes.html

7 Yorkies looking for homes on that page.

I dont want to say why I dont want to rescue as I will come across as shallow and will get slated!
I know there are so so many animals out there in need of a good home but I am looking for a new yorkshire terrier pup, so I dont really want info about a rescue dog - just looking for advice on where is the best place to go to get a new yorkie pup. I have been in touch with the IKC today, so fingers crossed something will come up soon enough!
    Thanks a lot

I know this will do your head in talking about shelters again but I got my Yorkie as a pup from a shelter. The advantage of it was, he is so well socialised from an early age, he loves all other dogs and people and I was still able to train him myself ( so no trauma or previous bad habits) Whatever you do best of luck and keep socialising it. Yorkies are great ;)

Sorry, I find this a bit of an odd attitude. I hope you're getting a puppy for the right reasons, have done your research and realise what hard work a puppy is, how expensive they can be and that they are potentially 10-15 years commitement. I find it sad that even though you say you know there are 'so so many animals out there in need of a good home', you're not interested in helping 1 of them. Shallow indeed.

    Hi OP

We got our Yorkie pup on donedeal - my other half devised a cunning plan when ringing people! He always said "Hi I am ringing about the puppies you have for sale" and most of them replied with "which ones, I have loads" so you really can fizzle out the bad ones. There are some good people out there, selling puppies. Not everyone on donedeal is out to make a quick buck. Another thing is to google the mobile numbers on the ads, if you see it on numerous donedeal links, you know they are bad sellers.

When we went to see her, she was kept in lovely conditions with her littermates, and her parents were there for us to see. We knew from the off that she was for us. They are great little dogs, with fabulous personalities, and I couldn't encourage you more to follow your heart and get a puppy; to watch the changes in them from the day you bring them home is amazing.

There is no harm in doing a bit of ringing from ads you see on donedeal. Just make sure you see the parents (at least mother) and meet them at their house, not at a garage, or on the side of the road somewhere!

If you need any advice, send me a PM.

    Here is our baby:

This is the reason why I DONT want to go into the ins and outs of why I do not want to rescue - nobody has to justify their decision NOT to rescue!!! We have always had yorkies growing up - both my own family and all my immediate family, I am WELL AWARE of what comes with them, thanks very much for your concern!!

I am looking for a yorkie puppy, to buy, not to rescue! You find that sad, well thats your problem, I am actually sick to my eye teeth of defending myself on these forums due to wanting to get a new yorkie.. Read my OP its plain and clear to read - you dont like it - dont read and dont post end of!

To everyone else thanks so much, I rang IKC yesterday and they are helping me out! Thanks all

    hi tootie,
a friend of mines brother is a dog trainer and he was on the look out for me - he came across a yorkie in a shelter, and I was interested, my friend rang me yesterday to say hes a no go, he has no jaw due to ill treatment and is not good around children (I have 2)

We are looking to buy a new pup tbh. I have no interest in any other dog, only yorkies, as we grew up with them and I dearly love them, yeah I know I will get slated for that from all the doo gooders, but isnt it best to get the dog you WANT than to settle for a dog that you MIGHT grow to love - and then potentially end up abandoning down the road.. my friend rescues all the time, he has 5 rescue dogs, and he has advised me to go for the dog that I want and nothing else, cause all too often, people settle for any dog and its not what they really want!
I am not here to justify why I want a yorkie puppy and I made that clear in my post, so please, just post if you are going to give me info on yorkies and nothing else, thanks

Never mind his attitude, which is understandable, your attitude is appaling, how dare you imply he is getting a dog for the wrong reasons,
    how patronising are you !!!!!!

mumtoe&e: I got my cocker spaniel from donedeal.ie, she wasnt a breeder, and my dog is brilliant. Once you can go and see where the
dog lives and see the parents, you should have no problems. I have had
breeders try to scam me on done deal, but you realise pretty quickly what
happening. As for that idiot (Traceypoo) just ignore her ignorance....

Thanks reeta - do you know something - I could have just gone and bought the first pup that I fell in love with - but no, I have chosen to take my time and be patient and do thorough research - I am sick to my eye teeth of the attitude of some people on these forums - seriously there are so many "holier than thou" attitudes, its unbelievable. People are far too opinionated for my liking. I made it clear in my op what I was looking for, if I wanted advice on how to go about rescuing a dog, then I would have started a thread on that - but I didnt - I am looking to BUY a NEW yorkshire terrier PUPPY - tutt tutt shame on me, I am such a heartless person for not going down the rescue route, and as for thinking about how much hard work puppies are - god nah I havent thought about that at all at all - sure its gonna be a doddle!! Arent they just like teddy bears??

FFS - I would like to think if I read a thread from someone looking for ADVICE regarding getting a specific dog, that seen as how they are going to the bother of researching and asking for advice that they are indeed putting thought into it!!

Not everyone gets a pup and disposes of it when they are sick of it you know!!!!

And not everyone wants to dog rescue, so get over it.. yeah I know heartless arent I not wanting to rescue!

Thanks a lot reeta - I am just fed up of looking for advice on getting a yorkie and always getting the same replies "oh well obviously you have not put thought into this" or "shame on you for not going down the rescue route"

I have made it clear I am NOT rescuing a dog - I am buying one - a puppy - yeah shallow I know!! But deal with it!! I have!

Wow mumtoe&e you are very very defensive. I wonder why?

This is an open, public forum, if you post something you are open to comments and suggestions you may not want to hear or agree with so I think (and this of course is just my humble opnion) you should get over yourself - 'sick of those with holier than thou attitudes' what the hell is wrong with wanting to rescue a dog????!!! Plus after saying how adamant you were about not wanting a rescue dog, you said there was one you were considering?

I never said you were going to get a puppy and dispose of it
I never said you didn't do any research and knew nothing about puppys/dogs
I never said you were heartless

In your original post you never said you had yorkies all your life and so had experience of the breed

As for 'reeta' calling me ignorant and an idiot AND patronising, wow I haven't been slated so much in one day for a long time, good for you dear. I was simply stating my opinion which, to reiterate, is allowed on open, public forums.

And backseat modding is a bannable offence. Report the post and keep out of the argument. Stirring is not allowed.

Guys seriously, the OP just wants a puppy and wants to go to a responsible breeder to get one, there is absolutely nothing wrong with that - and I run a rescue and am always pushing rehoming dogs onto people, but if someone wants a particular breed and wants a puppy, then thats entirely up to them.

Best of luck with your search, have you contacted the breed club? They should be able to give you a list of decent breeders. Maybe also go to a dog show if you can and chat to the yorkie show people, they'll know who has a litter planned.

I am very "defensive" is right - as I am fed up of getting this same reaction every time I post on forums looking for advice re: buying a yorkie!

If I wanted advice, opinions, or otherwise regarding rescuing, then I would have asked - I didnt, so your opinions are not necesssary on this thread!

I think going to a dogs show would be a good way to find a decent breeder, there are a few IKC ones coming up on the 11th Sept in Dublin as far as I know.
The only Yorkie website I can remember is:

    COOLAFANCY YORKIES

    http://www.coolafancystud.com/yorkshire.html

They are based in Arklow, I've never dealt with them so I can't comment on their dogs, but you could contact them for more info.

Yes, it is imperative you get a dog that suits your circumstances and needs. It does not suit everyone to get a rescue dog and you are well within your rights to hold back any relevant personal information you wish, that's your own business! My own circumstances meant I couldn't get the breed I wanted from a rescue which I chose for very specific reasons (Westie Rescue will not rehome with kids under 10). I also had to get a puppy due to my circumstances. My next dog will be beagle (also have reasons why I got the other breed first) which may well be a sort of a rescue in that I will consider a young adult not suitable for hunting from the lodge if it fits the bill otherwise (Must be extremely well socialised with horses so finding a suitable one from a regular rescue centre would not be easy) Failing that I will get a puppy I can socialise myself.

Just to add I have had no problems whatsoever between the Westie and the kids, I choose a non-registered puppy that was a 'happy accident' and had been reared in a family home with young kids over an IKC reg. puppy that was reared in a garden shed with very little human interaction and I make no appologies for it :D.
