iPhone Running App

    Hi folks

I am a very casual runner i.e. 10km/hr for 20 mins on treadmill twice a week, and have done one 8km road race last year. I would like to do a few more races this year including my local annual 10k race.

I can really only motivate myself to run when listening to my music playlist on my iphone. In addition, I am a bit of a gadget junky. Hence I would like to know if anyone could recommend an iPhone Running App that can do some or preferably all of the following:
    • integrates with the music playlist
    • provides training programs, and actual race programs for 5, 8, 10k, half and full marathons
    • when running on the treadmill can advise on what speeds to run based on whatever training program you select
    • when running outdoors can calculate your speed, distance and calories, together with tracking your route via GPS

    cheers!

Don't know if it's any good but maybe you should look at an app called Nike + iPod. I think it may do some of the stuff you are looking for but check it out anyways.

    Check out Runkeeper:

I've been using it over Nike + for a few weeks and much prefer it. If you have a spare few euro or have your iPhone jailbroken then i recommend the Pro-version, has everything you need.

I use endomondo if you search for it on the app store you will find it.

Its not perfect but its pretty good at telling you how far you have run and your speed. It will also upload it to the internet when you are finished. The internet site is social based so you challenge your friends and if you see your buddy out for a run you can send him/her a message and it will be played through the headphones. It also sends splits and distances down the headphones also so you don't have to keep looking at the screen to check what you have done.

The only thing I don't like is the fact that it doesn't give you your average speed.

Im also a very casual runner, and I use imapmyrun+ from the itunes store after it was recomended to me by someone on the fitness forum.

It does not do everything you have on your list, but does lots of it :)

    I love it personally..

    + 1 for runkeeper.

Have used it for about 9 months now, and haven't looked back.

I use it for cycling too and it works just as well.

+1 on Runkeeper. I found it great for a long time while i was starting out running. However i'm pretty sure you don't need to jailbreak ur phone to use the Pro version. i didn't have to anyway.

I'm using iMapMyRun also and find it great. I had installed RunKeeper but found that it wasn't supported in my region (IIRC). Must look into it again. Either way, iMapMyRun 'free' does most of what the OP needs it to do... The PRO version probably does it all...

I must admit I found it awkward adjusting to the size and weight of the iPhone on my upper arm, as opposed to a slim ipod in my hand. Also, I take out my sim card (and drawer) and keep it in my running shorts zip pocket (with my house key) as an incoming call will interrupt the training record.

At least that way I can still pop it back in if I need to make an urgent call!

Cheers for all the responses guys. I have had a look at the Endomondo, iMapMyRun, Run Coach and RunKeeper apps. All of these apps, which are free, look impressive, and all look to have very similar features.

In terms of my original requirements below, all of these apps seem to satisfy no.s 1 and 4. However none of them seem to offer no.s 2 and 3.
    1. integrates with the music playlist
    2. provides training programs, and actual race programs for 5, 8, 10k, half and full marathons
    3. when running on the treadmill can advise on what speeds to run based on whatever training program you select
    4. when running outdoors can calculate your speed, distance and calories, together with tracking your route via GPS

Am I asking for too much?
Is it a case that to get an app which will provide training programs, you will need to put the hand in the pocket and pay a few bob?
If so then can anyone suggest one which fits the bill?
If not then can anyone suggest an alternative, such as an app where you could manually enter a training program, for say a 10k race which could be found online?

    thanks again folks!

I use sportypal, doesn't do all that you want but is a great app.

Just saw this advertised the other day from adidas called MiCoach. I haven't tried it yet but it looks good.

Runkeeper allows you to manually enter your own training programmes so overall that might be your best bet! Would not be suitable for treadmill running though as it works off gps.

thanks for all the responses guys. i went with troy's suggestion of the adidas micoach - it ticks all of my boxes and it's free so i'm a happy camper. roll on the adamstown 10k next weekend!
