So many text in/phone in shows.
I'd love there to be a radio show that just played music. All kinds of music not just golden oldies.

I totally agree. Was listening to Spin "the most music station" for 20 minutes yesterday and no not one song was played. Instead they were talking about toning up certain parts of the body. Not good enough. If I wanted to do that I would ask google my friend.

Sounds like you chose the wrong 20 minutes there as Spin are pretty much wall to wall music most of the time. They DO have talk programmes alright (gotta fill that BAI talk quota somehow!) and from what I've heard, they do them very well.

    Ah there are, in fairness.

Which stations are you listening to at the moment?

I'm talking about morning radio shows. That we can get here in Sligo. We are limited to 2fm, Today fm, Ocean fm, Radio 1, Mid west, all talk shows.
Apart from i102 and that's for young 'uns.

Fair point so... if you're in Sligo then there's little in the line of "music radio" on FM to cater for you - unless you're in the target demographic (young 'uns, as you put it) of i102-104, who cater for their audience very well.

I can only suggest listening to stations online. Check out sites such as http://www.shoutcast.com/ ... Depending on your musical tastes, there's a huge variety of them out there from dance to classic rock and ... well, everything else!

I'm lucky that I have an internet radio, so I do have a choice.
It's not much use when I'm in the car though.

I've found 4 fm to be great for playing a good mix of music if you could find that. Some chat, yes, but for the variety of music, there's little to beat it. In work, I'm stuck with FM104 (being the only station we can tune in properly) and although they play lots of music, it's the same songs over and over so wall to wall music is not always the best option (and as I type, they are indeed playing yet another Rihanna song - ugh!). I can't believe I'm slowly turning into my mother by complaining thus about the music being played ont he radio today...

I think radio station managers copped on to the fact that talk is cheaper than playing music some years back, this view was bolstered by the new technology allowing the reading out of texts and phone ins to become the drivers of morning "music" programming. As said above the interweb is the place for music radio these days.

Even Phantom suffers from this. The specialist music shows are excellent, but the morning show is filled with utterly vacuous "What's in the tabloids", "What's your favourite breakfast when hungover" type chatter, same as the 10 other stations fighting for an increasingly small market share.

As Mike mentioned, the Internet is the way forward for music programming, the best €3 I spend each month is for my last.fm subscription.

When people have 6000 songs on an iPod do they really want to listen to an endless stream of other people's music? Personally, if I want to listen to music, I listen to my iPod and talk radio interests me more.

Play FM in Dublin had uninterrupted music of a fairly high quality last Saturday afternoon. I listened from midday till 2, not a word spoken amid a torrent of awesome reggae, funk and electronic bits.

Dublin City FM is finding itself behind my needle more and more too. They do talk, but it's not as bad as some.

There seems to be more emphasis on talk these days..each station trying to get the juiciect stories ,trying to get people to text/mail in at every opportunity....they're destroying radio imo....its a bit like MTV..anyone remember when they use to play music non-stop....

    They're meeting demand.

With the internet, ipods i tunes etc etc people are less inclined to listen to a radio station in the hope they might play something they like when they have access to so much music now.

the choice in internet radio, mp3 players on phones etc.

hell i'd be happy if they just keep playing "test transmissions" forever !
