Anybody know where I could go to pick up some nice bagels without paying way too much money for them?

This stall is in the market on Saturdays. The man at the stall who i think is the owner is very friendly.

    thanks,
to be honest though those bagels are not my favourite, theyre much too heavy for bagels in my opinion, more like round pieces of bread.

proper bagels are boiled before being baked - they should be dense.

If you want a puffier bagel maybe consider making your own bagel-shaped abomination? :D

Dense fair enough, but having lived in New York I don't think those bagels are really like ones you get in Jewish delis over there. I like the ones from the market, the have nice flavours but they don't have the chewy texture I'm looking for. I'm not knocking them, they are tasty and I often buy them, it's just they're not like real bagels imo.
Anyway I went to Mocha beans to get their 2 euro take away large americano which was nice as always but their bagel with cream cheese was 4 euro so I just had cereal

Damn that's an expensive bagel. Do you bake at all? They are simple to make and afaik freeze well so a tray of 12 or 18 should last ages. You should also allow for the possibility of differences in water, ingredients, etc used in the NY bagels and the ones you buy at the market. Further research will be required imo!

from a claudi roden cookbook. tried and tested:

mix 500g strong white flour with a packet of fast acting dry yeast, one egg, 1teaspoon salt, 1tablespoon oil, 1tablespoon sugar. Knead with your hands and slowly add in up to 100ml of water until you have a smooth dough.

cover bowl with cling film and leave to rise for 1.5hours then punch down and knead for another 10-15 mins.

Roll out to 1inch thick rectangle and cut into approx 10 strips. Roll strips in your hands then pinch the ends together to make a bagel shape. Leave to rise for an hour.

Boil a pan of water and drop the bagels in, 4 at a time for one and a half minutes only, turning once halfway through. Repeat with all bagels then brush them with egg or milk and stick them in the oven at 190 for 15 mins. If you liek you can stick on sesame seeds, poppy seeds, whatever, before baking.

    Good luck and enjoy.
